... and decide to get $100.

The machine gives me $250...

I check the receipt and it is reporting a withdrawal of $100...

I know the machine was defective because a guy came and checked it. 2 or 3 customers used it before me. They all left with a strange face...

So I went to see the bank teller and explained the situation.

I gave back the cash, and explained that I did not want to have more withdrawn that I asked, having a tight budget this week and all.

The teller explained to me that actually:

1) there is no way for them to retrace the transactions
2) the people with the reponsability to put the money cassettes in the machine inverted them accidentally...

I would've withdrawn the maximum $2500 from the ATM.

You did the Right Thing and you should have a Nice Warm Feeling for doing so. And in the future, maybe you'll want to tell the teller "The cash machine gave me an extra $20, here it is. Maybe it's broken." and keep the excess; it is the bank's problem if you've already told them about the machine being broken... I wouldn't feel very good with myself if I kept the extra money.

I'd have taken full advantage. I owe nothing to the bank, they get enough from me.

If *I* screwed up, *they'd* screw me. Works in reverse, too.

The funniest thing is that I once got an extra $20 from a cash machine; it was stuck underneath the slot and there was room for prying fingers...

The funniest thing however is the day after the cash machine incident.

I met a manager to pay a debt and forgot my interac card. So she called me 15 minutes later and says to pick up the card at the front desk, which is right beside her office. I get back there and ask for my card. The front desk lady does not have it so she goes to see the manager. The lady comes back with the card and asks me all sorts of questions regarding my identity.

The manager is right there by the door...
The front desk lady said " we need to ensure security and confidentiality"...

I could barely believe it...

But yes I am OK with what I did; it was the thing to do, being honest.
