If I'm buying a MacBook used that has Applecare, what's the procedure to get it transferred to my name?

The applecare is attached to the serial number. A repair shop doesn't care whose applecare it is.

You can verify the coverage here: Redirect for Online Service Assistant

Before buying, I'd check with Apple if the Applecare is really valid.

That is not necessarily true. A few months after I sold my iMac, I got a call from the buyer saying that the shop wouldn't honour the AppleCare warranty until I called Apple to transfer the warranty over.

However, I don't remember with that iMac if I bought the warranty separately or not, if that matters.

Does this screen mean it has AppleCare or just the 1-year warranty?

That's odd. When I put in my serial # it specifically tells me when my applecare will expire.

Was this an Apple retail store? I don't have the ability to see what name is associated with a serial number, even if I want to. When a machine comes in for repair, we put in the serial number and it's either covered or it's not, there are no names attached to the machine.

I dunno, but I was specifically told call Apple directly, not any store.

So I called Apple, and got the machine transferred over to his name. They wouldn't honour the warranty otherwise.

P.S. If it makes a difference, I purchased this online, so they had my name before they even shipped the thing to me. Also, this is in Canada. Note also this was after the 1st year, and the warranty I'm talking about was the extended AppleCare warranty.
