Let me preface this by saying that I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue.
Since I wasn't sure, I decided to post it in OS X, rather than in the Hardware forum.

I have an external FW drive with lots of movies on it. I tried to copy all the movies over to a new, bigger HD. I used Carbon Copy Cloner. However, some files just wouldn't copy.
When I tried copying them via the Finder, the Finder also crapped out.

At this point, I wasn't sure if I had a broken HD. Did all kinds of scans, but couldn't find any problems with it. What gives ?
Next up, tried using DataRescue II to "rescue" one of those files. No dice.

And guess what worked ? Opening the file in QT, and saving it back to the new HD.
Can anyone explain what's going on here ?

How can CCC, the Finder and DataRescue II fail, but QT not ?

Is my HD craping out ?

really hard to say here, and I'm no expert, but I've found that Finder generally sucks when dealing with inter-drive copying. Not sure if it's the same with CCC, if the Finder doesn't like the files, maybe CCC won't either?

Perhas the QT opening gave the Finder a kick into realizing that it is a valid, whole file.

I'm just flabbergasted that DataRescue II is no use.

I have one movie file that won't copy across disks.

Downloaded off a Chinese torrent site.

Weird.

Maybe I should try cp in the terminal. But I thought that CCC is essentially doing that.
