Is it a refurbished/recycled cartridge or a new one from HP?

I'd return it and buy an original. If the problem persists, it's likely to be the printer.

If I'm honest, I don't like HP anymore: their consumables are expensive and you have trouble with cheaper, refurbished cartridges.

Before you print, check the printer options. See if there's an option for "EconoMode." Make sure that's off, then give it another go.

now under 10.5.+ the print options seem generic

I recall maybe in the past when the print utility was from HP there were options as you mentioned

if they exist now I have no idea where they are

HP makes a fine laserjet, Ive had this one a long time and other before it

there printing supplies however are very very expensive. I used the original HP cartidge with three 'generic' powder refills just fine. this is my first generic cartidge, about 1/2 price of the HP

this only seems to affect a few items as I print much less then I did in the past.

too bad there are no ink jet printers that would print only in B&W like the old epsons

as least none Im aware of

greedy B#$(^@#tards

Open up TextEdit.
Apple-P to print.
Near the bottom of the dialogue there's a pulldown menu, probably says TextEdit.
Drop down that menu and explore the options. Should see one that's something like Image Quality
Go in there, and set EconoMode to Highest Quality.

Nope. not for me

i get at the top of a small dialog box:

Printer: (HP Laserjet 1300) (add printer; print &Fax prefs prefs tells me about the HP printer but no where does it suggest a image quality option)

Presets: (Standard 1) pull downs about save etc

then the bottom line: (?) PDF Preview cancel and print

no image quality anywhere

I think this was when the driver was from HP not from Apple

any way, mucho thanks for trying

Im always open to other ideas on finding 'print quality'

Click the blue triangle button next to the Printer pull down menu. That should expand advanced options. You should then see the additional menu.
