I have both firefox and safari. I upgraded to FF 3.6, and have the adblocker and fastDL add ons

some time after the upgrade to 3.6, googles news page does not add the links very fast at all, and sometimes might go to the page twice. firefox frequently does notd quit properly after this and I have to force quit.

safari does not have this problem

probably just before this started to happen little snitch told me google was addressing my computer, which i denied several times as no google ap was running at that time.

are these two things related? why does google address my computer from time to time when nothing is running related to google.

many thanks

Firefox prefetches, so if you had it open but just sitting there, it could have been prefetching anything.

I would start by disabling any addons and clearing Firefox's cache.

If that doesn't help, move on to removing the Little Snitch google rules you may have created by choosing 'no' to allowing google activity.

If that doesn't work, delete anything inside ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox. Just make a backup first of any Firefox bookmarks if you care about them, because the folder(s) and files inside that path hold information (cookies, bookmarks, more) about your Firefox profile.

If you know how to do packet capture, you could identify the ports and protocols. CocoaPacketAnalyzer is one I prefer on the Mac side.

Have you installed any Google software in the past such as Chrome or Google Earth? If yes, then there's a Google app update running in the background checking for app updates.

I do have google earth but never use it and its not open.

do you think, once I sort this out that google checking in on me is benign?

thanks!

The fact that you installed it is enough. Once you install a Google app, a background process that checks for updates is also installed and running in the background. Google isn't checking up on you, this process is checking Google for updates.
