I decided to upgrade my graphics card to the ATI Radeon HD 4870 (i also purchased a new Apple Display and hooked it up via the Mini DisplayPort).
I've used the computer for a few days now and everything seemed to be working fine. But 3 nights ago my screen turned black and the fans in the computer went crazy. I was forced to hold down the power button and reboot. It happened again this morning.
Has anyone else had trouble with this graphics card? or a simlar experience?

I have the exact problem as you. I also have a ATI Radeon 4870, and I built a new gaming rig, but every time I boot up, the screen will go black and the fans go crazy and I will have to restart the computer three or four times before it stays stable until the next boot up.
I didn't know what was wrong with it, as I built it and there could be any number of problems, but since you have the same problem and graphics card, that seems to be the issue.

Sounds like a nasty graphics card driver bug.
