when i double click on a photo in iPhoto, you can see other photos within the album at the bottom (center) of the window. this is the preview pane. Sometimes, they are black/blank with dashed lines around it. Why? and how do you fix?

it doesn't happen all the time, but it happens often.

Is this iphoto 11? Hold down command and option when it launches and choose some of the repair options. Make a backup though before doing any of these.
