Hi all,

I just purchased a used mac lc. when i turn it on the hard disk crackles for a while and then it just shows me a blank screen. Sometimes little lines come up on the screen. i tried a new hard disk and even gave it a sys 6.8 startup floppy but it didn't help. It's been running for 30 mins and has continued to show me a grey screen. I but the original hard disk thatprobably has a system folder in it back in. PLease help!

Have you tried ZAPing the PRAM?

Also, try changing the PRAM battery. Dead batteries will cause problems from wrong dat and time, to the Mac not starting up at all.

The PRAM Battery is the one behind where the hard drive ribbon cable plugs in, right? OKay I'll try.

How do you ZAP the PRam? The changing the battery didn't help.

To zap the PRAM, hold down command+option+P+R

However, after our AIM chats, I think it may be your ROM that is bad.

I just picked up some LC III logic boards on ebay to upgrade my three LCs. I can mail you one of the old logic boards if you're inside the continental US.

I decided to take the LC apart fo parts. tah tah.

I troubleshooted the same kind of problem on an LC II a few months ago... It was driving me nuts!
Turns out that the Keyboard cable was damaged and would not allow the machine to boot. Try disconnecting
the keyboard and just use the mouse and see if it boots up now?
Just a possible solution.

Well, I'll put the LC back together in that case. However I think I static-zapped the ram. Thankyou very much, I shouldn't have zapped the Ram. I put it out with the trash.
