No, I am looking for something that will build a schema for web based applications using MySQL.

Alex,

Keep your eye on the Eclipse open source project. http://www.eclipse.org/

There are people working on a port of this to OS X (although it is still very early), when it is complete there will be a whole world of application development tools available to OS X.

If you know any good Cocoa/Carbon programmers, try to push them to come on board! Currently, most of the work is being done by one programmer in his spare time.

I'm with Alex. We *desperately* need something like that. Or erWin. Or TOAD (my personal fave). Eclipse sounds nice, but too general-purpose for schema design.

As far as I'm aware WebObjects EOModeler is pretty darn good at doing what you ask. A bit of a learning curve, but good none the less.

Anything would beat going through VPC (how I'm doing it now).

I saw Schemas and got excited, too, for a moment... but my head was in another place - have been hammering on XML Spy to make a *Nix or OSX version for some time... best XML Schema tool there is, but they're very unresponsive to the idea.

Looks pretty sweet, but don't you have to buy WO to get it? Or is it included in the ProjectBuilder IDE for WebObjects?

Try OpenBase Manager. http://www.openbase.com/

It was included in WebObjects 5, but I believe that Open Base can be downloaded for free for development. I'm not sure if it will work on MySQL or Postgre SQL.

I'm pretty sure the manager is wed to the OpenBase db. I (and others, I assume) need a generic tool to connect to multiple vendors' databases, either via native connections, odbc, or jdbc.

Where, oh where, is my Oracle client for OSX?

Yeah, you have to buy WO, but the price is pretty good - at least for
Education ~$120.

PHPMyAdmin and CocoaSQL are useful, but may not be what you are looking for.

Those are good tools for basic admin, but I really need a good modeler, like erWIN, that can connect and work with a live db. You'd think someone would have created a java app to do this via jdbc...

That's EOModeler again. It does a pretty good job, but it's not easy to configure. Once you get it working, it's relatively intuitive. Unfortunately, I think it does only come with WO. I'm not sure why they don't offer it separately.

My point about Eclipse is that its mission in life is to become a generic multi-platform base for anyone that is developing a development tool to use as their base. There are literally dozens of tools vendors already doing this, Rational has already released a version of their Rose modelling tool for Eclipse.

There is also an open-source dataase modelling project that is well on its way.

Once the Eclipse framework has been ported to OS X all of these great development tools will be available to run on OS X.

One thing you can take to the bank is that there will be great design and modelling tools built on top of Eclipse. The quicker we can get it ported to OS X, the quicker we can get all of those tools. For that to happen, we need experience Mac programmers to join the effort.

How about looking up 'SQL' on versiontracker. I am using the commercial package NaviCAT. I find it better at controlling MySQL than EOFModeler.

NaviCAT looks fairly usefull for what it is, but I was looking for more of a visual modeler.

I cant figure out how to edit a table that already exists using NaviCat?? Is there some thing Im missing???

For those that havent seen NaviCAT, it has basicly the same functionality as phpMyAdmin... (more or LESS)
