..er than using a hands-free cell phone.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...erts-warn.html
Motorists talking on hands-free mobile phones react 30 per cent slower than drivers slightly over the limit, experts have warned.
And their reflexes remain dulled for up to ten minutes after having a conversation, the damning study by the Transport Research Laboratory found.
It means that millions British drivers could be unwittingly risking the lives of themselves and others while abiding the law on phone use.
The tests included asking motorists to brake suddenly while driving at 70mph.
Compared to the stopping distance of a driver in normal circumstances, the over-the-limit driver took a further 13 feet before coming to a standstill.
But the driver using a hands-free device took 26 feet, exactly twice as far, before coming to a halt.
Measuring concentration levels and the time it took for the brain to fully focus on the task found a 30 per cent reduction in reaction time between the hands-free driver and the over-the-limit one.
The TRL said any kind of conversation in a car reduces the driver's concentration levels for up to ten minutes after it has ended.
However, few motorists are aware of the dangers.
Make mine a JD and Coke, thanks.

Sounds right to me. I've always thought it was ridiculous to suggest that it was the handset that impaired people. Like, yeah, holding a small object up to my ear is so mentally taxing. The problem is that talking to someone divides our attention.

So then we shouldn't allow passenger seats in cars? Drivers can talk to them too...

I'm trying to boost my oestrogen levels. See, if I boost 'em enough and grow boobies, I wouldn't have to bother going out of the house.

Fortunately, my wife is as in tune with traffic as I am, even as a passenger, and if she gets REAL quiet while I'm driving I start looking for what I missed.

Not only that, it also takes more concentration to hear and understand low quality cell phone audio compared to someone beside you.

I think the concern was that people have only one hand while talking on their phone. One of the biggest problems though is over confident drivers. My sister always says that stupid people are ruining it for her, but the problem is she doesn't have an appreciation that she's driving something that can kill people when she's not paying attention. My UPS driver the other day said the same thing. Fact is 98% of the time you might not even need that extra percentage of attention, but on the off times you shouldn't be talking on your phone with someone who can't possibly be paying attention to the situation you're driving in. As well how many times have you seen people when the conditions really warrant attention still talking on their phones?
