Just wondering what peoples' thoughts are.
I predict that the computer will be absorbed into the body via modular cyborgery.
Harddrive = tiny cluster of nano-wires and chips inserted under skin.
Screen = contact lens-like membrane.
Cursor = oculomotor control.
Key = computer operations will become thought-like; accessing info from the net with be like retrieving a memory; email will become a form of synthetic telepathy.
Pros = can use computer while riding a bicycle (or whenever—you will be semi-computer).
Cons = "spam thoughts."

A dystopian view of the future might suggest that a future computer a hundred years from now will be a 100 year old Mac or Dell buried under the ruins of some old city.
Or, perhaps we'll be genetically engineered in the future to have such advanced cognitive ability that we won't need computers to do rapid calculations for us.

A computer 100 years from now will be unrecognizable to our eyes in this time period- maybe akin to what Zeeb said. We will be the computers.
Or maybe not.

At the very least, I hope they're upgradeable.

I think predicting 100 years from now is so far off that it's not even worthwhile because there's no way we could know.
20 years from now, however, would be extremely interesting. Think of how far we've come in the past 20 years. In the next 20, computers are going to be crazy. I have no idea what, but it's fun to think about.

I hope they have movies and software over the internet sorted out by then. The prospect of "inserting" cds doesn't sound too good.

While I accept things will be MUCH more advanced in 100 years, I don't think they are going to be nearly to the extent that you are describing.
Convenience only goes so far... I don't see people embracing the inserting of technology into their bodies.

IMHO, people won't be that familiar with what a hard drive is in 100 years.

I'm not sure about that... the great thing about a screen is... many people can see it at the same time. And while I hate it... people can point at what is on my screen and comment accordingly. I'm sure the technology will advance considerably, but screens aren't going away. TVs were invented over 60 years ago... and while they have constantly been upgraded, they are still a box you look at.

I think this may be one input device, but I think there will be others. I don't think the mouse is going anywhere fast. For fine motor skills, the mouse works VERY well for what it does.

I think the progession to cyborgery is logical. Different bits of technology (phones, cameras, web browsers, mp3 players) are increasingly being consolidated into single all-purpose units, like the iPhone. These will get smaller and smaller. First they will be clipped onto lapels (much like the new shuffle) then worn like jewellery, then they'll get so small they'll have to be fixed to the body to avoid being lost. That's one step away from cyborgery.

It's a word but.
Steven Rose uses it in "The 21-st Century Brain", and Ray Kurzweil uses it in "The Singularity is Near" (which book's author your hero Bill Gates calls "the best person I know at predicting the future of artificial intelligence")

FYI, your sig is too big.
Signatures
Our current signature rules give you two options:
- an image (200x50px max, 10KB max, non-animated) and up to one line of text, OR
- no image, and up to four lines of text.
In either case, blank lines do count, and lines must be of reasonable length so they don't wrap on most screens (think 900px browser window width). Text should not be larger than the default size (no use of the SIZE tag).

Frink: Well, sure, the Frinkiac-7 looks impressive, don't touch it, but I predict that within 100 years, computers will be twice as powerful, 10,000 times larger, and so expensive that only the five richest kings of Europe will own them.
Apu: Could it be used for dating?
Frink: Well, theoretically, yes. But the computer matches would be so perfect as to eliminate the thrill of romantic conquest. Mw-hurgn-whey. [3F20] Much Apu About Nothing

In the future, computers may weigh no more than 1.5 tons.
