Has anyone had any experience with upgrading the original 1.8GHz Core Duo (32bit) socketed CPU to a modest Core 2 Duo CPU?

Physically, it is indeed possible and not that difficult according to the guys at iFixit. See this link for the discussion.

The idea is to install Lion, which maybe that would need to be jerry rigged as well.

Would the upgraded iMac be allowed to have Lion installed? I'm guessing Apple's installer looks for machine IDs, so we might need to clone an install over to our upgraded system.

Any thoughts or experience would be appreciated. Thanks!!

I think you can install Lion if you install this EFI update.

WARNING! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.
