So, VT's Xserve supercomputer is now in 71th place.

TOP500 List - June 2007 (1-100) | TOP500 Supercomputing Sites

It was only a few years ago that it was top 3 in the world, with G5 Power Macs.

I wonder how long it will be before they're out of the top 100. My guess is 2 years.

I guess they could auction them off with a VT certificate and afford a 1-by-1 replacement with the most powerful Intel Macs today. They don't even have to do it all at once.

As long as they are not distasteful and slap a sticker "I survived April 16" on them.

How fast would an Intel Xserve be anyway with that bench?

What's April 16 about?

P.S. Apple's Xserve Intel Xeon Quad 3.0 GHz running OS X is SPECfp_rate_base2006 = 39.7.
That's about equivalent to the AMD Opteron 890 Quad 2.8 GHz running Linux.
Note that the Dell running WinXP 64 with the same chips as the Mac is a little faster.

It will be interesting to see if Apple's numbers improve with Leopard.

They'll be out of the top 100 next time the Top 500 list is released (6 months).

To explain why I guessed that:
71st in November 2006 is 107th in June 2007.
71st in June 2006 is 101st in November 2006.
71st in November 2005 is 64th in June 2006, due to a 50+% increase in the number of processors.
71st in June 2005 is 92nd in November 2005.

I would have found 32 people guilty of something. Then it would have been ok.
