I am pretty set on the top of the line 15 inch though I would prefer a 17.
Does anyone know what the performance difference between the 2?
I love the idea of the new building method, but I am not sure if that is negated by the fact the new video card may not be goo as the older 8600.
Any posts or thoughts on direct composition of the two side by side?
thanks again., i lovs this board!!!

If you accept the benchmarks posted by barefeats, you can look there. According to them, the 9600 is about 10 to 15 FPS faster than the 8600 most of the time.

8600 - defective, locks up all the time and screws up in creative ways

9600 - isn't the 8600

Based on these two facts, I'd say the 9600 is a pretty major improvement.

Here you are. Some of the games tested perform clearly better on the 9600, but in many of the other tests the difference isn't that great. I'm tempted to pick up a close-out MBP (yes, despite Intel being inside) because I don't like the new MBP glossy only screen; I like a lot about the previous design. If you like the glass glossy screen and the rest of the characteristics of the new design, it is more future proof.

Charles, unless I'm mistaken the flaws in the 8600 were corrected and do not affect the February 2008 MBPs. My brother owns one and it seems to be running flawlessly thus far.

Good for him. I own one and the UI locks up whenever I try to do anything that involves using the GPU too much. From some other people I've talked to, I know I'm not alone.

Thank you for that important information.

So these NVIDIA issues with the 8600 pertain to both the mobile and the deksop versions if the CPU? I haven't followed this very closely.

We're talking about the GPUs used in the MacBook Pro in this thread, so I used 8600 as a shorthand for 8600M GT. I have no idea if the issue affects the desktop version or not.

Yeah, it was a flaw found in both the desktop and laptop GPUs.

Thanks for that input. And yeah, I totally mixed up threads here. Never mind.

8600 - defective, locks up all the time and screws up in creative ways
What I meant to ask here was if we already had confirmation that the 9600M doesn't lock up and "screw up in creative ways" like the 8600M did. Obviously the defects in the G84 and G86 series GPUs (impurities in the material) have been taken care of, but what about the rest of the issues?

To my understanding, it wasn't about defects in the materials so much as defective build specs from Nvidia to its OEMs. According to what I know, there's no reason not to trust the new GPUs.

nVidia has been rather coy about the extent of the problem, but I don't think it's safe to assume any member of the 8 or 9 series is OK yet.

Any ideas on the performance?
Though I have the MBP 15 top of the line, I still want to know what I am looking at performance wise.
I also bought these 3 games with it, Fallout 3, Deadspace, and Farcry 2.
I have not played them so I have no idea of how they will perform.
