I posted this about 6 weeks ago, got some replies but never was able to resolve the problem.
Our G4/500 used for DTP work was hooked up to a set of external speakers, and worked fine. We pulled the speakers for use somewhere else, reset the Sound settings, but no sound from the internal speaker. Checked and rechecked the settings, trashed the Sound pref file, zapped PRAM...nothing works.
I am truly stumped. Any and all help would be most appreciated.

This worked for me... Open up your Apple CD player and check the volume settings for that app. Mine was set to zero and nothing came out of the speakers.
Still,.... you're not getting any sound? No beeps or anything? Try checking other apps that have a sound control and see if they're set to zero volume.

A good point was raised. There is no startup chime during either a cold start or a restart. Suggestions?

Do you have any speakers connected? Try a different set. Or headphones.

I had the same problem a while back...tried everything for about 3 weeks..nothing worked till I opened up my comp...and wiggled the wires around a bit. That solved it. Stupid , but effective in my case. Good luck !
