So, Bill Cosby's career is pretty much over, right?

His legacy might have survived had he died 5 years ago. Now? Forever tarnished.

I mean, his career was over a long time ago, but his reputation and legacy are done for.

He had a special coming out on netflix (pulled) and a show coming out on NBC. It was actually kind of coming back.

I don't see how some people can still respect Polanski but revile Cosby.

I don't think Polanski is mainstream enough to garner much opinion. His heydey also came earlier, leaving out younger people.

Still, one (Polanski) is revered by most of the Hollywood elite, despite his love for drugging and sodomizing 13 y/o girls, while the other is being crucified, by those same people, for allegedly doing the same. Besides, I believe you can ask most non-muppets who Roman Polanski is and they'll know about him, hell, he even won an academy award, while on the lamb avoiding extradition and imprisonment.
This really is a case of acceptance based on which side of the ideological divide they've chosen. At least Whoopi Goldberg is consistent regarding them both, if frighteningly misogynistic.

I haven't heard them comment on Cosby so far.

No idea what non-muppets is.

Artistic skill has no correlation with not being a scumbag. The Cosby Show isn't suddenly bad because all this accusations came to light.

I never liked the Cosby Show, so imo the show was always bad. But I love the old Fat Albert show, and some of Cosby's earlier stand up work too.
I'm just surprised at all these allegations, there's some pretty ****ed up shit happening right there.
But why do these people wait so long - the guy is 77 for chrissake? I think there should be a statute of limitations applied to some degree, or a statue of limitations - if you prefer to just look at it.

A couple of things. First, obviously, much easier to get media coverage now.
Second, another woman read the account and it read like a carbon copy of her experience – which she thought was a one-off, and decided to join in.
Third, the snowball effect then happened. The less alone you feel, the more likely you are to come forward.
Fourth, assault and rape are hot button topic lately, making this the most perfect of storms.

Most of them didn't wait, they came forward years ago. A few more recently came out of the woodwork because it's in the news now.
Why wasn't a big deal made of it years ago? I dunno. It's harder to bury stories like this now thanks to the internet.

In and of itself, I don't think rape should have a SoL.
There are issues of false accusations, but then that's not an SoL issue. SoL is for giving a certain level of comfort to the guilty. When it comes to rape? **** that.

Correct. They didn't get either media coverage nor were their accusations taken seriously.

This whole thing reminds me of some alter boys I knew - it took them years to admit that they were all hit on (and some molested) by priests/brother, but never said anything to anyone until now. Of course that is the Catholic church, so it doesn't really matter. (!)

Cosby seems to have really gone off the deep end in his old age. His old standup was incredible back in the day, but I saw a new special he did a few years ago and it was painfully unwatchable. He was recently on Colbert and only seemed to be about half there. Like talking to your 92 year old grandfather or something.

A book just came out about Hollywood and the abuse that has gone on and continues to go on. Todd Bridges says he was abused, along with both of the Coreys. That is probably the diference with Polanski and Cosby. Same with the BBC bloke and Elmo's voice actor.

Sorry, why is "comedian" in scare quotes? Hannibal Buress is a legitimately hilarious comedian and writer. It's unfortunate that most people will correlate his name with this scandal and not 30 Rock or his standup.

*looks at the TV listings*
Until this week The Cosby Show was on 2 channels, shown daily, according to Dish Network. Now? I can't find it at all. There was no announcement or statement, it's just gone. Not that I blame them, it's like the 7th Heaven scandal all over again.

The most devastating part of this is that The Cosby Show played a part in my early childhood.
Even in recent years, I looked at Cosby through an idealistic, days-gone-by lens. I have two of his stand-up albums in my iTunes collection, and I'll bust them out every year or two.
This story just sucks.

I can't decide if that's over reactionary. I mean, at least in Cosby's case he's well known.

I thought that was the self-evident reason for this thread. The majority of us probably had exposure to him from as late as adolescence to our early childhood.

It's not nightmare fuel, but it is cringe-enducing. And what I've read is mostly fourth-hand stuff. But yeah, I'll take a pass on legit pedo stuff. Avoiding the Honey Boo Boo scandal has been a bit of a chore.

No doubt about it.
I don't usually believe initial reports of accusations brought against celebrities (since they're such huge targets), but the number that has come forward against Cosby is so damning, it's hard not to believe.
Also, I don't know if you guys saw this, but Don Lemon did a smashing job interviewing an alleged Cosby victim: CNN anchor Don Lemon crosses line with Bill Cosby rape accuser Joan Tarshis: 'There are ways not to perform oral sex':
“You know, there are ways not to perform oral sex if you didn't want to do it,” Lemon told Tarshis during a TV interview.
“I was kind of stoned at the time, and quite honestly, that didn't even enter my mind,” Tarshis answered. “Now I wish it would have.”
“Right. Meaning the using of the teeth, right?” Lemon prodded.

The Saville stuff is very bad, but I've been able to handle it.
The guy in the band is so bad no one wants to print it. You need to look at the police reports. That's a pass for me.

It is about rape. It is also about what happens when you go off the reservation. Cosby has fallen out of favor due to his criticism of black youth and the hip hop cutlture. Buress mentions this in his routine.

What's extra creepy about the whole thing is that Bill Cosby's celebrity status pretty much guaranteed him an endless supply of willing and super attractive sex partners should he desire them. And yet, he does this crap. The dude obviously got off on the drugging and unwillingness part more than anything else.
