I thought this was spam until I saw your name, then realized there must've been something to it and clicked on the thread. This is...surprising.

I wonder if this will become a trend?

Until a practicable means of preventing piracy comes along, I can see more stuff being made available for free so that companies can collect on advertising what they're losing through illegal downloads.

AppleTV needs to start taking advantage of these services, which seem to be rapidly multiplying with the likes of hulu.com. If they can do it with youtube, they can do it with these.

That was my thought, too. The only problem is that Apple was able to work closely with Google to get behind the scenes of youTube (TiVo apparently got that privilege recently too) to make the interface polished and Apple-like. For these other sites, (possibly with the exception of Hulu, since it's sort of a centralized hub) there are too many spread about the web in too many different formats and stuff that I don't see how apple would keep their awesome UI while allowing these sites on the Apple TV. I wish it could happen though. I am soooo close to getting an AppleTV, I just need more reasons to get it.

Not downloads - streaming.

Which means I'll be sticking to the torrents.

Yeah I guess the main thing is that it would have to 1) be in an AppleTV-compatible format and 2) have a front-end that works with AppleTV. That might be a lot to ask.

But so many networks are doing this now, with NBC's hulu, and ABC does it, etc. It just makes sense to use a TV - how many people want to sit in front of their computer while they watch this stuff?

Some people don't have a TV. I am one of those. What the networks are doing here is extending their traditional business model (free content with ads) to people without TV sets but with Internet access. The result is that we can watch their programming for free without owning a TV set and a cable plan, the networks get more ad revenue, everyone wins.

It doesn't surprise me at all, frankly.

I don't think there is a lot of *new* people to win.

Someone who doesn't own a TV doesn't own it FOR A REASON.
Someone who can't afford a TV surely can't afford a decent computer and high bandwidth internet connection.

You, for instance, don't own a TV because you (most likely) don't think there is stuff worth it to watch on TV. If there was (in your opinion), you would have a TV. Right ?

The networks have already been doing this with select shows. Every episode of "Lost" is on the ABC website for streaming (with ads).

Edit: D'oh, BRussell beat me to it.

Holy crap! It works in Japan! Every other 'legal' streaming site won't let me watch their videos abroad. Kudos South Park. Kudos.

It's more a matter of priorities. It may not be so much that someone can't necessarily afford to buy a TV as that someone doesn't want to have yet another bulky thing cluttering up their place, or that someone doesn't want to pay however much the cable company wants for service every month for something that they don't consider important.

Instead of such an absolutist stance, I'd say that it's more that I don't usually watch enough TV to justify the clutter and expense. If it's free and on the Internet, some people are going to browse through it every now and again. It helps that you don't have to watch a particular show at some fixed time and work your schedule around that.
