15" FP iMac 800 w/ SD and 1G Ram

Ran Software update to 10.3.4 then restarted

Got the grey screen w/ apple and spinning gear... nothing after that...

Waited a long time, still nothing.

Tried safe mode start up and it did the exact same thing.

Tried verbose start up and got errno 55

Tried to use target mode with another machine eMac 700 and it froze the eMac... had to restart both machines.

Tried to use panther install disk and it gets to "Preparing Installation" and freezes forever.

Zapped pram multiple times and all of the above symptoms still occur.

I have most of my data backed up but one important project that I spent most of the day working on.

If anybody has any other ideas, I would really appreciat the help.

Thanks. -Jeff

Have you tried any directory repair utilities? Can you give [significantly] more information about what happened in verbose mode?

More likely, your directory structure on your hard drive was already hosed and the update was just the last straw. If you have issues with overlapped files and *then* run an update, your machine is not likely to boot afterwards.

Start with apple hardware test. move on to diskwarrior.
