Been there... well, the parking lot of a dead concert. Quite enough of that experience, thank you!

I went to a few in the late 80s early 90s. The one thing that got annoying was all the dread-locked rainbow wearing guys passing you whispering "trip" "shrooms" "pot" etc.

We asked a guy to take our pic in exchange for a beer. No problem. 15 minutes later he ran out of beer and asked us for one. We said we didn't have anymore (we actually had one left, but it was OURS, dammit!) and he said "come on, one beer. I'll get you high. Whatever you want.". Err, no thanks.

well, at least nobody i know has ever heard of them (and i know quite a few people).

it was funny when i first started going to college (in boulder, co., of all places ), i didn't even know that the band existed. i walked up to one of the many hippies and asked her what this "greatful dead thing" was. the room went silent...stares of disbelief...

I don't like large crowds and the noise. So think that I will pass on that adventure.

Was this one of the strange women you danced with?

If so, then I'll have to kick your butt.

Well, I mean I'll have to add you to my growing list of butts that need kicked. Eventually, I'll work my way down to your name. Might take years or decades or something.

Seems I was invited to go see that Dead concert - but I only had an hour's notice. And I couldn't figure out a way to go 700 miles from southern North Carolina to Long Branch, New Jersey in an hour.

She said I was just making excuses....

I went once, for the cultural experience. When you grow up in SF in the 70's, the Dead is just sort of everyday background music. Still, I had to go, just to see what all the hubbub was about. July 4th 1981, Manor Downs, here in Austin. Was a pretty good show I guess, but certainly nothing that I'd sell all my worldly possesions for so that I could follow them in a van. I've known plenty of Dead-Followers in my life, and none of them have been able to adequately explain it to me.

Anyway, the ex-wife ended up having an okay trip up until time to leave, then things started to turn sour in the parking lot. There were fireworks a-plenty, and a full-on burning car, about six spaces from ours. She pretty well spent the next hour as we were trying to get out of the parking lot hunkered down on the floorboard, with her hands over her head, screaming, while I tried to make like everything was okay.

Ahh, the stuff memories are made of...

Oh, jeez, that reminds me...

On the way back to the car we saw a couple putting their jackets on the hood of our car (Mary has a Honda Odyssey). We were pretty far away so we didn't really say anything but just as we got close, the girl gets next to the car and (I kid you not) takes a dump. So here I am buzzed and I yell "OH MY GOD SHE'S TAKING A DUMP NEXT TO MY F*CKING CAR". The boyfriend said something like "we couldn't find a bathroom" and I pointed to the Portos behind us. The girl was mortified but couldn't really DO anything about it until she was done. The thing is, two of us couldn't get in the passenger side since it was all ICKY there so Mary had to drive up a bit. It was more funny than disgusting, but to actually see someone do that really just makes you squirm. Not pretty. It's good she was in the shadows. Also, it's good we saw it happen or someone would have stepped in it.

I hate hippies! I mean, the way they always talk about "protectin' the earth" and then drive around in cars that get poor gas mileage and wear those stupid bracelets - I hate 'em! I wanna kick 'em in the nuts!

Hippies. They're everywhere. They wanna save the earth, but all they do is smoke pot and smell bad.
