Yesterday we lost an American legend. The creator and producer of the longest running, first-run, nationally syndicated program in television history passed away from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. Like most of my peers, watching Soul Train was a Saturday morning ritual. One that provided a lifetime of positive memories. A true cultural icon is gone.
Authorities: 'Soul Train' founder dead of gunshot wound - CNN.com
His inimitable closing line to every show seems fitting under the circumstances ....

There has to be an easier way out than blowing your head off.

Article said he was very sick. If I had a choice between dying slowly and very painfully, or a bullet to the brain pan, I'd take the bullet.

I've seen a guy blow his face off and miss his brain.
I'd choose a heroin overdose over a bullet.

I occasionally watched that show when it first appeared. He blazed a trail!

When I was a teenager, I watched Soul Train every Saturday afternoon. Good times. Sad news.

I too as a kid occasionally watched Soul Train. I probably enjoyed the music as much as what I heard on American Bandstand. Of course I also watched Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and those two shows usually had a mix of different styles that I enjoyed hearing. Still, I've always had respect for what Don Cornelius did.
The Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuu uuuuuuuuuultrain will always be with me.
Strange article ending though; the last paragraph seems more like a Michael Jackson tribute.

The Jackson 5, and thereby Michael Jackson, would have never been the huge stars that they are if it were not for the exposure they received by performing on Soul Train. The same can be said for many other legendary R&B acts that simply had no other outlet to perform LIVE on television to a national audience during the 1970s and 1980s. Artists like Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, The O'Jays, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Earth, Wind & Fire, etc. .... anybody and everybody on the R&B music scene is indebted to Don Cornelius because their careers would simply not be what they are today without his efforts.
