Fairly new to OSX. What's the consensus with the updates, when I get prompted that "new updates are available for my computer" should I DL them, or just blow them off. Are any particularly important?

TIA,
TG

Virtually all of them are particularly important. Now, if you don't use iPhoto, then iPhoto updates aren't important. However, if you don't know what it is, you should probably install it. Security updates are vitally important--as are OS updates, as security fixes are tied into the OS as well. Though we aren't in a position where not installing an update will cause problems like it does on Windows, we could get to that point if we neglect the security updates. They are released for a reason.

For some reason my mother refuses to install any updates presented to her. All she has to do is click "Install" and enter her password, but no, she just won't do it. Why? I don't think she has a reason.

So I made a cron job (now launchd job since upgrading to Tiger) that forces all updates to be installed using the command line softwareupdate tool. Now she doesn't have a choice.

And that's how important software updates are.

The ONLY updates that I think anyone even MIGHT consider delaying are the actual OS updates, and even then, the reason is flaky at best. Some people prefer to wait a few days with the actual OS updates just to make sure that no outstanding problems or new bugs are introduced...avoid the problems associated with early adoption. One of the 10.2 updates was bad enough that Apple actually pulled it from the Software Update list and off their downloads page after it got so many complaints. Updates that bad are rare, but they can and have happened. Really though, circumstances like that one are rare, and I would say that it's almost always perfectly safe to upgrade whenever Apple recommends it.
