2day someone told me something interesting... that with the Apple icon Steve Jobbs was making some reference to a homosexual WWII code breaker who developed a prototypal ancestor of the modern computer and then committed suicide by biting into an apple he had injected with poison (something to do with a spat with his fun boy)... that's all my informant could tell me... but... I'd be really interested to know if this is true.... plus the apple icon used be rainbow coloured... is that stretching it...

Anyone?

P.S.

Could this be any more irrelevant? I know. But it was either here or an equally unsuitable forum, and since I'm on a PB..... well....

BTW, I have already googled "gay code breaker apple icon"

Interestingly, there are such things as gay Mac communities ... but no info on the above question

you are refering to Alan Turing. He was a gay codebreaker and he did kill himself will biting into a cyanide laced apple. No idea if that's the basis for the apple icon, though it seems to fit. Btw, this should probably be in the lounge, but i'm no mod.

no worries, welcome to the forum, btw

minty: check out wikipedia.com and search ALAN TURING. They mention the apple icon and dismiss it as an urban legend:

"In the book, Zeroes and Ones, author Sadie Plant speculates that the rainbow Apple logo with a bite taken out of it was a homage to Turing. This seems to be an urban legend as the Apple logo was designed in 1976, two years before Gilbert Baker's rainbow pride flag."
