I'm with my mom, driving from Montana to visit her parents in Garden Grove, CA. We've gone through Idaho, Utah (saw Bryce Canyon) and Arizona (the Grand Canyon) and are now just west of Barstow, CA.

And I'm posting on MacNN while mom is driving 75 MPH down the freeway...

I'd say having the internet at your disposal is just about the best thing for a long car ride.

(SSharon beat me to it!)

Maybe I'm missing something, but how exactly do you have internet in the car? Cellphone?

Look outside the window and enjoy the view unless it is a road trip that you have taken at least a thousand times.

play cows and graveyards. count every cow you see on your side of the road. if you pass a graveyard you go back to 0 and have to start over again. its a stupid game.

We look at license plates of cars passing us or that we pass.

If it's a non-personalized plate, it will usually be three letters and three numbers.

So we come up with an acryonym on the fly.

AWI 932 = "American Wallaby Inspectors"

PMP 082 = "Psychotic Mongrel Patrol"

(none of those are real but you get the idea).

It's surprisingly entertaining if you're easily amused.

Punch the person next to you every time you see a windmill (much more fun in rural areas)

Play really loud obnoxious music on your laptop, especially if the radio is on. Sing, if possible.

Any ramblings are entirely my own, and do not represent those of my employers, coworkers, friends, or species

Thanks for your usual sanctimonious response, Monique.

I think I looked at the things outside more than 99% of people. I spent two days doing nothing but taking photos.

I was simply excited that I could use my cell phone to check my email while going 75MPH down the road.

Yeah, my mom isn't too into music - but it's not "the parents" - just my mom. I'm a 31 year old adult. Just travelling with my mother...

This looks to be the perfect time for that magical fusion of your iPod and mescalin.

I gotta agree with Monique, at least to a point. The U.S. is a lovely country, and it's a shame to miss out on some of the lovliest parts of it.

I've driven from San Antonio to Houston I don't know how many times and I still enjoy the view in a lot of places.

But it DOES get old when you're not out in open country...

Each of you draw borders (with a dry erase marker) around a quarter, 4-8 times on each respective "side" of the windshield. If a bug hits, sticks, and dies inside one of your "zones" you get a "token" basically... AKA Bug Bingo. Can be played with actual grids where 4 in a row = the win, or just played with random circles and first to fill all wins.
yep.

For your destination, play this album over and over.

More specifically, this song.

Seriously though, when you're down there, if you want to go to a really good Vietnamese sandwich place, in Westminster, check out Lee's Sandwiches. #5 is my favorite and be sure to get a Vietnamese Iced Coffee while you're at it.
