A few days ago my iMac G5 wouldn't wake from sleep (black screen with rainbow cursor).

I forced a restart and it wouldn't get past the grey Apple screen.

I restarted from an install disc and ran Disc Utility which reported errors that couldn't be fixed.

So, I backed up, erased my drive and tried to reinstall, but it consistently quits about half way through (the disc is fine, I used it to install on the external drive I'm now running off).

Is my HD dead? Disc Utility S.M.A.R.T. status says it's verified.

I can write to the disc and read files from it, but I can't reinstall Tiger on it.

Thanks!

Well, since you can halfway install, the disk seems to be at least alive to some degree.

How does the disk react to tests with the Apple Hardware Test CD? Have you used Disk Warrior or similar programs yet? Good luck.
