I work at Micro Center and work part of the time in the Mac department...we currently have the 1.83ghz MacBook Pro for $1799 brand new...since it is discontinued. I looked at the inventory yesturday and I think there is something like 12 in stock. This just got me to thinking...with intel updating their chip speeds so often, Apple will have to continue to use some of the fastest chips available in order to stay competitive with the MacBook Pro. This means that every couple months there will be brand new Macbook Pros..that may be 100 or 200 mhz behind in chip speed, for hundreds of dollars off.

I figure by the time Micro Center sells out of these, it will be close to the time Merom will be put in the MBPs...and there will be discounts AGAIN.

PS...I just bought a brand new 1.33ghz Mac Mini for $245 and the Airport Extreme/Bluetooth module upgrade kit for it for $14.50. Hooray for discontinued price drops!

actually there are very few employee discounts on computers. The price I paid for that mini and airport card is the standard price for anybody....the advantage I had is that i knew about it - those things arent advertised.

$1799 is a brand new MBP, but you have to be a student to buy it at that price at Apple.com

That $1550 price is very tempting, but I am still on the fence about the heat issue. I have a 12" 1.5Ghz powerbook and bought it refurb from Apple have no problems with it except the "wobbling" effect. I use it on my lap however for extended periods of time and from what I hear that is not possible with the new MBPs. at least not yet.

Since they bumped up the CPU, my school had the old 1.83 and 2.0 for $1499 and $1799 ($1699 with applecare)... should've waited

Actually, the older 2.0 GHZ MacBook Pro's are "technically" better then the new ones. The reason for this is because the old 2.0 GHZ MBP have 256 VRAM while the new ones only have 128 VRAM .
MacBook Pro | 2.16 Ghz CD | 100 Gb HD | 2 Gb RAM | 10.4
iBook Clamshell | 466 Mhz | 60 Gb HD | 576 Mb RAM | 10.4
