Under System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items preference pane I have a login item called "Extensis Suitcase X1". I dont use Suitcase anymore and want to delete it, but it will not remove using the "-" button. I have searched my machine high and lo for it and can not find it at all. Looked in the home/preferences/loginitems.plist and it is not listed there. I recently completely re-installed my operating system (10.4.11) while keeping the user folder, so it must be located in my User folder.

Any ideas on how to find it and delete it?

You need to turn it off from within Suitcase's preferences.

If guesses are allowed...

1. Open Activity Monitor> All Processes and see if Extensis or Suitcase is listed. If it is, select it and double click.
2. In the next window, select the Open Files and Ports tab. The following window will reveal the location(s) of the recalcitrant files you wish to delete. But be careful as other stuff may also be present.

When you say you did a reinstall, do you mean a clean install where you copied the user folder back over or you did an archive-install? Because I think archive-installs leave the /Library folder. In /Library/Preferences (that is, the one not in your home folder), there can be "secret" login items in one of the plist files there — I think it's loginwindow.plist. I hate programs that use that "feature."
