I've just got a new MBP and am very happy with it except for one thing that's bugging me.

Whenever it's about to play a sound, such as something as simple as the checking mail 'ding', there's always low-level static before and after. It's quiet and not a big deal, but it's annoying and not something I've noticed on other Macs. Is this a new 'feature' of Leopard? Or a hardware issue? Or has it always been this way and I've just never noticed before?

Cheers,

Will

I get it when my MBP is on battery power, but not connected to AC. What about you?

I have something similar on my MB.. it's only noticeable with headphones, but if the rooms quiet enough (and I'm reaaaaaally paying attention) the speakers do it too. I've only noticed it when plugged in, but haven't really checked when on battery.

Well it's a hardware-management issue, possibly new due to a firmware update at some point? It's the sound circuitry turning on, playing the sound, and then turning right back off to save power. Not really an easy way to fix it, unfortunately. I hear it on my iPod too; I can hear when the chipset shuts off after I turn off the iPod.

I frequent a music forum and read about this. One user fixed the problem with this:

RadioShack.com - Home Entertainment: Accessories: Headphones: Gold-Plated Volume Control Cable for Stereo Headphones
