I don't think I'd ever fly with that airline, now that I've heard this:

'I'm not qualified to land plane,' pilot tells passengers

A British passenger plane was forced to turn back minutes before landing in Paris because the pilot of 30 years' experience was not qualified to land in fog, an airline confirmed on Thursday.

Speaking over the address system as the Flybe flight approached Charles de Gaulle airport, the pilot announced to startled passengers "I am not qualified to land the plane" and turned back to Cardiff.

She told the South Wales Echo newspaper: "Twenty minutes outside Paris, the captain said, 'Unfortunately I'm not qualified to land the plane in Paris. They are asking for a level two qualification and I only have a level five. We'll have to fly back.

A friend of mine who is using that airline regularly says that a well-known nickname is flymaybe
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

It sounds like it was an administrative issue more than anything else, and that the pilot probably would have been capable of landing the aircraft if he tried.

"One ticket to Washington, please. I have a date with destiny."

Perhaps, but the bottom line is that the airline let him fly a plane he wasn't fully certified to fly.

He was fully certified to fly. Just not to land.

He was certified to land, but didn't have certification in landing in the fog, so Paris told him no.

One way to keep costs down is to not have to pay for a very highly trained pilot, and just pray that only 1 in 10,000 landings he attempts to do will be out of his expertise.
