Well, I can answer that I don't know, but since noone else seems to know either, it might be time for some educated guesses.
It looks like the backlight is leaking under the display panel. On the Macs I have disassembled (which notably do not include your model), the display unit is one sealed unit, display panel and backlight, and framed around with tape to avoid light leakage. Could the sealing tape simply have come unstuck, especially in that lower left corner?

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.
