After getting getting 10 crashes in 3 hours and not raising a fuss for all the previous crashes I've had in the past month with OmniWeb 4.1 final I said 'screw it' and switched.

My history isn't corrupt...my bookmark isn't corrupt...OS X isn't corrupt...trust me, OW 4.1 final sucks. Some of the sneakypeeks were waaaay more stable that the final.

I'll wait for OW 5 while using Chimera. Screw all the cool OW features...all I want is stability.

Very few people are having problems with OmniWeb 4.1 final, I've used it constantly since release on multiple machines and only suffered 1 crash.

Anyway, Chimera constantly makes me delete my prefs because it unexpectedly quits at launch. It works fine the first time, but when I quit the app and re-open it will fail to load...very annoying.

I have to agree with Guy... OW 4.1 is the most unstable piece of software on my rig. I thought I stopped the crashes by fiddling around with the preferences, rebuilding bookmarks, etc., etc. But, what the hell?! Should I have to work this hard just to make the damn thing stay open more than ten minutes at a time or fizzle out at the first sight of a Flash movie?!

I tried Chimera and it's really, really sweet. Sure, OW beats it hands down as far as features are concerned, but at least I can bid on eBay auctions at the last minute and not worry about a crash screwing me up...

All I have to do is cruise around ESPN and CNN for a while and OW crashes out. OW can't display my Fidelity.com site nor align the tables on my home attbi.com web page. All other browsers work fine. My system is fine - OW is the problem. I am tired of sending in crash reports with each session. Chimera gets better and better - fast, good rendering and I plan to stick with it until something better comes out of OW - which is a big if at this time.

Guy,

If you are serious about trying Chimera, I strongly recommend the <a href="ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/chimera/nightly/latest-trunk/" target="_blank">nightly builds</a> over the old <a href="ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/chimera/releases/chimera-0.3.dmg.gz" target="_blank">0.3 milestone release</a>. Many bugs have been squashed and some minor new features are being added.

Of course, I miss the HTML editor and services of OmniWeb, but Chimera's speed, stability, and compatibility is awfully nice too.

Now, if only Chimera/Mozilla could fool Apple's Homepage (via iTools) into displaying properly, I would have absolutely NO NEED for any other browser.

OW 4.1 seems pretty stable on my PowerBook G4/667, but on my Dual 1GHz server it crashes constantly. I must have sent at least 20 crashes logs via email since the final came out. No other program has any problem on that machine and I run it 24/7 as an email and web server and the machine itself hasn't crashed once in two months of running. But OW 4.1 on there is a total bust.

S'funny...I really tried to get used to Chimera after the unpleasant crashes I've had with OmniWeb...but there's something about those windows popping up on the screen after they've finished loading that annoys me. I'm a multitasker, goddammit...I open a window, I type in the address...then I open another window and type in another address (screw tabs, they suck)...but as I'm typing the address in the new window, the old window pops up on top to indicate that it's done loading. WTF!? Is there a way to prevent this garbage from happening?

How come we still have no Service support? Is it because of the embedded carbon Gecko-engine? Apparently 10.2 will give free Services to all carbon apps...god bless Apple for doing the lazy devs' work. I'll have to wait for 10.2 to play with Chimera.

While it was fun to have stability...I must admit OW is just as fast or maybe slightly slower than Chimera on the dual-800 G4 and I need my Service support...it's crucial!!!! How can you people live without it? I'll take instability, refined features and Service support at this point before anything else.

Sorry guys...I've converted back...'twas fun while it lasted though.

Also, my Chimera tip o' the day, courtesy of someone else on these boards (i think?) that posted it:

If you find that Chimera boots up more slowly than Internet Explorer, just:
1. Download <a href="http://homepage.mac.com/mybulkmail/screenshots/splash.tif" target="_blank"> this 1-pixel TIFF</a>.
2. Control-click on Chimera, and Show Package Contents...
3. Open Contents/Resources
4. Drop the 1-pixel TIFF in place of the splash.tif (rename the old if you want it later)

On my aging Powerbook, that trick cut launch time in half.

Just started using these nightly builds, they're not bad at all. I'm quite pleased with the progress Chimera is making. It looks like they're close to releasing 0.4, the latest nightly builds have the splash screen with 0.4 now. Tabbed browsing is awesome, especially when I'm navigating message boards and have several windows up at once. Mozilla and Chimera rule... I use Mozilla on my PC, and Chimera on my iBook.

I did this because I disliked splash screens and I noticed that the startup speed was twice as fast
