Emphasis mine. I guess Apple's argument pro HTML5/anti-Flash is entirely ruined then, huh?
It's an open standard, but no one cares. Apple's the only one to implement it.

How do you call a standard "open" if it only works on devices of a single manufacture?

Doesn't make it any less open. It's just that obody else has bothered implementing it.

This is very true, which is why I found it strange how much it seemed like Steve expected people to be surprised.

I just noticed they moved the window buttons on iTunes 10 to the edge, vertically. I'm starting to think that the iTunes team is exempt from the HIG.

And, surprise surprise, iTunes 10 is still 32-bit Carbon. Ugh.
Wouldn't it be great if Apple just rolled all of iTunes syncing features into the Finder?

In 3 years, it will be against the guidelines to NOT do that.

10.5+ only.
I think this was the final domino for Tiger. Do any apps support it any more?

They've openly published the standard. It just lacks alternative implementations.

Interesting, I don't think I've seen this "Security Certificate" icon in an Apple installer before today's iTunes 10....anybody else?

Downloaded iTunes 10. Ping no where to be seen. I guess it's not supported here in Hong Kong.
it's amazing that iTunes is now in its 10 iteration and we still can't buy music here.

It didn't show up for me until I clicked on the iTunes Store. Then it appeared right below it. Odd.

The iTunes team has been ignoring the HIG for a while. I think the team leader gives Jobs head or something for the exemption. It's truly confusing, you'd think on the one app that for a lot of people defines Apple, they'd be a bit more strict with the team.
Also anyone else hate the new icon? It's worse than the new QuickTime one. on the iPod touch the icon for music is a red/orange music note that looks like the one for iTunes. On the iPad and iPhones music is the iPod icon that is a nod to the old school iPod look that doesn't exist anymore in steve's mind. The icon for the iTunes store for music which they just call iTunes is a purple question music note coming out of infinity and beyond! And now in my dock I'm going to have a black music note on a glowing blue button. Ironically for the one app that doesn't use glowing blue gelly buttons.

AppleTV = fail, even at $99. Well, maybe "fail" is too harsh. Perhaps it is just "not compelling".

Not really, if the content is already at 1080p.
I guess the bonus is that if you're going to buy an Airport Express to stream stuff anyway, you may consider just getting an AppleTV instead. And before people start ranting about 802.11g, etc. again., in my house the streaming is actually over Ethernet.

I agree with you Eug. I still don't understand why it's more compelling then the Xbox 360 or PS3s that many people here have that already have instant access to at least 720p media with Netflix, and 360's $4.99 streaming 1080p movie rentals but whatever. I guess I just like having one device to do one job, not 3.

If you're on any kind of bandwidth cap, streaming 1080 movies makes very little sense, at least in my house where we don't have cable TV - we get everything through the net. So I'd be ok with 720, especially as from 10ft away I fail to see any difference between the two.
Having said that, I am not in the market. My Mac Mini does me fine.

The price of the Apple TV is better but in the UK the content isn't there outside iTunes. There's no Netflix over here anyway, but it doesn't have iPlayer or anything similar to Netflix like LoveFilm. I've got a Samsung TV, and when I work out how it all works its got iPlayer, media player from USB, DLNS streaming from a computer (and there's an app for that to stream from iPhone). With that and the PS3 and Xbox plugged into it, I'm set.
|
It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Epic Citadel is actually pretty awesome. Can't wait until Project Sword is out. The graphics are awesome, even on my non-retina display touch.

It is pretty cool. What was funny is that the opening cinematic was chugging and stuttering on my 3GS, and I was a little let down, but then the actual "game" or whatever looked great.

Same here on my 3G touch. At the opening I was thinking "crap, it's only gonna be smooth on the A4." But the framerates of the actual demo are quite impressive.

Without Netflix or something comparable, I probably wouldn't have bought the AppleTV, but again...for me, it's my bedroom device apart from my PS3/360.

We have one in the living room, and one in the bedroom. That's it.
The bedroom has nothing more than a standard, progressive-scan DVD player. Also, we don't have cable (or satellite).

For $99 bucks the Apple TV is a decent deal for people who need something like that... but overall it's really not very appealing and it certainly isn't going to shake-up the fledgling set-top box market.
Without even trying I currently have 6 devices in my house that can stream Netflix movies (TiVo HD, 360, Wii, Blu-ray player, MacBook & iPhone) and I didn't purchase a single one for that functionality. So the Netflix streaming is basically useless to me. My TiVo and 360 can both stream videos from my Mac to my TV. So that's not really useful. And I can rent movies and shows on my Mac and stream them so the Apple TV doesn't even do anything there either.
It seems to me that most people already have their home entertainment stuff wrapped up, so any product hoping to make a big splash is going to have to really offer something new or a way better way to do something we're already doing. The Apple TV doesn't.
It doesn't really do anything that the old one didn't do. It's pretty disappointing.
The thought of an Apple device hooked up to a TV, with an App store full of Apps designed from the ground up to work on a TV is mouth-wateringly awesome.

Um, "iTunes Live" has been used for iTunes-exclusive live albums for quite a while now.
There's dozens of live recordings in the iTunes store with that name.
