Found this over on Macrumors:
Steve Jobs Presents to the Cupertino City Council (6/7/11)
Late last year it was revealed that Apple purchased a 98-acre campus from Hewlett Packard, just up I-280 in Cupertino. Last night, Apple CEO Steve Jobs, in trademark black turtleneck and jeans, explained Apple's plans for the space to the Cupertino City Council. Here's what the new 4-story building holding 12,000 employees will look like when it's completed in 2015:
As Steve describes it:
It's a pretty amazing building. It's a little like a spaceship landed. It's got this gorgeous courtyard in the middle... It's a circle. It's curved all the way around. If you build things, this is not the cheapest way to build something. There is not a straight piece of glass in this building. It's all curved. We've used our experience making retail buildings all over the world now, and we know how to make the biggest pieces of glass in the world for architectural use. And, we want to make the glass specifically for this building here. We can make it curve all the way around the building... It's pretty cool.
The facility will be 80% landscaping, with most of the parking underground, compared to 20% landscaping with all above ground parking currently. The current campus has 3,700 trees and Apple plans to increase that to more than 6,000 trees, including "some apricot orchards."
Apple also plans to build its own energy generation facility using natural gas, with the electricity grid as a backup.
One of the city councilors asked what the citizens of Cupertino would get from the new campus, and in particular brought up a free Wi-Fi network, like Google offers in Mountain View. Steve responded that Apple was the largest taxpayer in Cupertino and he felt that the tax benefits to having a company like Apple in Cupertino was benefit enough and the city should be providing a service like that.
"If we can get out of paying taxes, we would be glad to provide free Wi-Fi."

Actually, I don't think that's too far-fetched at all. He may be building it as some big mausoleum, almost pharaoh style.

and taking that one step further; he must feel he will make it to 2015; so he can see the finished project. hopefully. don't want another Disney, were he doesn't see the end of his ambition.

You can watch the Stevenote here. You guys think Steve Ballmer gets cheers and applause when he goes to a city council meeting?

Wow, he was shooting fish in a barrel with that presentation. If he'd gotten up and crapped in the floor and said, "that's what it'll look like" they would have still fallen all over themselves to accept it.
That aside, it looks like it will be an amazing structure.

I thought it was pretty funny when he threatened them that they would leave the city if it wasn't approved. It was like, "let us do it, or you'll be very sorry."

I killed myself laughing when the councilman asked for an Apple Store in the city. I'm surprised they don't have one.

They actually do have one on the main campus, but it's more geared towards Apple employees. It's the only place where you can get a `I visited the mothership' T-shirt.

The questions asked by all of the city council members were cringe inducingly terrible.
Er, have you thought about safety?
No, you know what, I knew we forgot something... our meticulously planned and incredibly ambitious headquarters is nothing but giant deathtrap for 13,000 people.
Durka dur, what's in it for the city?
Seriously? You know what, **** it. We're moving to Mountain View.
Duh, I own an iPad. See. Look at my iPad!
Yeah, that's nice. I wipe my ass with iPads, sold millions of them, whatever, but yours looks real cool. Cool story bro.

"Okay, let's move on to the Scottish accent. Now I think you'll find the Scottish accent is the complete opposite of the German accent in that phlegm in the larynx will hinder you. Okay. So we gotta clear away the phlegm. Remember: while attempting the Scottish accent, water is your friend. Now, is anyone here Scottish? Well, besides being notoriously cheap, your average Scottish person is drunk eighteen to nineteen hours a day! It's true, every single one of them! I haven't met a Scottish person who didn't have liquor on his breath while weaseling out of a check. Okay. So we've got our attitude, the phlegm is all gone, I of course need quiet...
'Scootie, yur bruther Lyle's in a wee bit o' truble. Scootie, put down that book! Scootie, wake up ya cheap drunken bastard! Ha-kah!"

I've worked in the service industry (waited tables, bartended) and I can attest that everyone is cheap, with the exception of the drunk.
None among us are quite as stingy as Steve Jobs, however.

Considering the author himself admits that he has no idea whether or not Jobs is involved incharitable giving, isn't it a bit early to call him cheap?

Of course you can, if it’s relevant to the thread. This thread is about Apple’s new building, and it’s not in any way relevant here.

I would argue that its not all about giving to charity. Bill Gates ought to give lots of his money away since he made it all by peddling dreadful software and hardware that has never once threatened to exceed adequate. Steve and Apple may not be saints, but in recent years they have pushed an entire industry that was previously content to dictate standards to suit its profits to raise their game and at least try harder. Apple products have made the world better, if only slightly. I would argue that M$ products for the most part have held progress back and charged us for the privilege. Of course if Steve still wants to change the world like he used to claim, his next step would be to take Apple more mass market and shave those hefty margins down. A lot. Shareholders wouldn't allow it if he wanted to though.
With his current strategy Steve may not give to the poor, but at least he only takes from the rich. Bill made his money by taking from everyone.
Its an interesting thought though. How long will Bill Gates and Steve Jobs be remembered? They are both successful businessmen, but its not like either of them really invented anything themselves. Bill Gates bought DOS and Woz built the Apple 2. I think if I were a multi billionaire I'd be looking for a way to get my name in the history books for more than being rich. I suspect BG is trying to do exactly that. Maybe if he can succeed in eradicating Malaria or something he will but again I suspect it will be a doctor in a lab whose name goes into the encyclopedia, not the guy who paid the bill for it.
Perhaps its off topic, but how would anyone here go about buying themselves a 1000 year legacy?

He made most of his money by having his company break the law because it was cheaper to pay the fine than change how they do business.

Al Gore gave about $200 one year he was vice president. This was verified by his tax returns and during interviews.
How that relates to Jobs and his pitch for a new Apple building I do not know. I like the new design.

Anyone else notice Steve staring at the ground after asked some of the worst questions (especially by the second speaker)? I'm wondering if he did it to hide his laughter or rage.
And the Wired article -- speculative garbage. He's calling Steve a greedy capitalist based on assumptions. Given how private Steve is, one would probably either do more research or give the benefit of the doubt. Alas, Wired is hardly a place for good news anymore. When they're not link-baiting, they're like Engadget 2.0.

Yah I think it was weird that Steve kept staring at the ground. Though it could have also just been nausea from the chemo or the lame assed questions. "Can we have free WiFi? Google gives free WiFi!"
