Been having a hankering for some hand drawn animation lately, and since i've seen all the Disney movies, i started looking elsewhere and came across some interesting and unusual movies which were definitely worth watching.
Though i'd share what i found...
The Last Unicorn
Fire and Ice
The Hobbit
Castle of Cagliostro
The Nutcracker Prince
Cheers

Ralph Bakshi is amazing. The greatest animator of his day.

I agree on both, though Wizards was more "accessible" and more entertaining for me. And of course the original Heavy Metal should be on everyone's "must see" list as well.
What, no Fritz the Cat?
Seriously though, there are some shorts that anyone who likes animation really should look into. To start with, (and to seriously bork your brain), there's Quasi at the Quackadero.
Then check out Closed Mondays, and move on to Moon Shadow, an animated video to Cat Stevens' song of the same name. These two are from The Fantastic Animation Festival, a 1977 theatrical release consisting of a bunch of quite (at the time) mind-blowing animated shorts. You can watch it, piece by piece, here. I think that shorts are a great laboratory for animation experimentation, so even if a film isn't a feature length piece, it's worth a watch.

Sally Cruikshank is the bomb. Good call!

I've never seen it, yet have the following spoilerish commentary.
I hear the hippo beating is unpleasant
Yeah, there's some interesting scenes - you should see it, it's worth a viewing just for the animation. But the film captures the era nicely with its NYU students, hippies and thugs.

My stupid iPhone game: Nesen Probe, it's rather old, annoying and pointless, but it's free.
Was free. Now it's gone. Never to be seen again.
Off to join its brother and sister apps that could not
keep up with the ever updating iOS. RIP Nesen Probe.
I personally, wouldn't say Ghibli (specifically Miyazaki stuff) is forgotten.
But an interesting piece of info for whoever is interested, regarding Ghibli, Miyazaki and my initial list....
-Miyazaki worked on Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro in the pre Ghibli days
-The guys who would eventually ended up working for Ghibli worked on The last Unicorn (and they're the guys who Miyazaki got to make Nausicaa before Ghibli was founded). wiki
My teen age son is big into animation, but much more Japanese. I watched Heavy Metal with him a few months back, and he was blown away. Even moreso when his full sized Heavy Metal poster arrived.
Heavy Metal was expensive to produce, because the producers went out of their way to Get Things Done Rightâ„¢. Proper attention to the original artists' style and especially the depth of each one's color palette, and high quality cel animation done by the production company (not outsourced), made the film work. If it hadn't been "Done Right," nobody would have bothered to watch it. I paid to see it THREE TIMES in one week when it first came out, and now I need to dig out the DVD and watch it again. Maybe I need to get it on Blu Ray...
Aeon Flux was part of LTV. I didn't see the movie, the reviews were bad.
The movie is one of those things where if you watched the animation, you knew there was no way the movie was going to be any good.
The original animation was both parody and satire... of animation. I'm not saying that's impossible to translate into live-action, but the impression I got is they didn't even try. They just played it straight.
Typical MTV. "The hip kids love this, lets suck out its soul and cash in!"
