Of course, eating your own species is a health risk, and that risk was the focus of the show.
However, someone asked if it was a problem with humans who ate it.
The woman being interviewed showed her Canadian colors by being utterly incredulous humans eat pet food. Very much an "oh, my sweet summer child" moment for this person who had been hurling truth bombs the entire night.
"Check out this site, it has mediocre dog food reviews, AND cat food reviews!"
Who said "I'm looking for good dog food reviews"?

This sounds as bad as the chicken jerky treat problem. What can we feed my dogs without killing them? I had to put a dog down three weeks ago because he wasn't recovering form pancreatitis. After reading this I hope it wasn't the food. We were feeding them Natural Balance.
What made is worse, is we lost his father a few weeks earlier. This was due to complications from Valley Fever he'd contracted. He was on fluconazol for over five years.
I was made aware of this because a co-worker rescues ferrets, and my best buddy and his wife have an elderly abyssinian cat that has a special diet and drug requirements. My kitty passed away in 2004 and I won't get another. Too hard to say goodbye.
Thanks, it's been a rough few weeks, especially on my mom. We live a few houses down and was taking care of the both of them while we were at work.
I hate to think the food may have been the cause. My wife is already afraid of that because we started feeding them Fresh Pet after our female (his mom) was getting finicky. She hasn't shown any signs of illness. (knocks on wood).
Sorry to hear about that Chongo. I don't even want to think about what'll happen when the big doofus (Ramses) dies, we're all so attached to him. It's like having a dog/cat hybrid with the best traits of each, hands down the most affectionate cat I've ever had.

The Vet at Madison Animal Hospital was amazing. We we in the room with both of them, as we were when it was my bud Oso's time. He was 16! Chango would be 14 in December, Chubby was 11. Chango was Chub's dad. We still have the mother, she just turned 13.
When we were leaving, Dr Starkel was in an exam room with a lady and her cat. She had that look on her face that said she was giving bad news. I don't know how they do it.
interesting that of the 10 worst brands of dog food many were fish-based. Which says something about the pollution in our rivers/oceans.
and of the safest brands, I've never seen them in the pet store/online.
from laminar's link, it's a comprehensive breakdown of the manufacturer ingredients and what they mean... but they do not do testing for unwanted chemicals.

We use Royal Canin brand foods for both dogs and cats. They are very specific in what they put in their foods, and can trace each lot of each food to specific sources and lots of ingredients. They have NEVER had a recall that I can find record of. Good food leads to healthier pets, which leads to longer life and more snuggles with your fur family.
Some cities allow for chickens to be raised/farmed in urban backyards. I'm thinking of it for the egg prospects and meat. I don't mind butchering a chicken.
As for feeding the chicken, I've watched a few youtube videos discussing feeding the chickens flax seed and other weird stuff. It's like feeding health food to chickens. My chickens will be able to roam the backyard for bugs, grass/weeds, and will only be fed corn, various seeds (sprouted or not), oatmeal, rice, and leftover kitchen scraps (including meat). The only supplement given will be oyster shell for calcium. Should be enough protein their diets.
Oh, I will also create a maggot farm where maggots will be raised for my chickens.

We kept chickens and ducks for about four years and absolutely loved them. We moved in to town two years back and it's no longer practical.
I'm not sure what we were thinking when we got them, but pretty quickly it became apparent none were ever going to slaughter. They had such personalities and were a joy to be around.
Lots and lots of eggs however. At the peak we were producing about a dozen a day. Many friends got many eggs.

The unexpected part of raising chickens. I've never owned any myself, but two of my friends are keeping quite a few on their land. They had a similar experience and developed some kind of crazy bond with a few of the chickens.
They both say the biggest downside is how many massive snakes are always crawling into the coop to get to the eggs.
The wife and I brought home a rescue dog from the Maricopa County Petite Pet Project. I took him out to the bark yard yesterday morning to do his business and managed to step on an anthill. Lucky had some ants on him which my wife quickly got off, no bites. I, on the other hand, received multiple bites on my feet. The result was me in the ER after passing out in the bathroom with what may be a concussion and jacked up knees. Be careful this summer, the little black ants are out in force.
My sister posted this after she found out I was in the ER
Wow, Chongo, that was a tough day for you! I hope you're recovering well, and that you've gone nuclear - or at least chemical - on those ants.
I had ONE fire ant bite in Panama. My whole finger (I was picking something up off the ground) swelled up like a big sausage and it took a week for me to be able to move it properly again. Those are the "original" fire ants; by comparison those we have in Texas are mild in comparison.
With that said, ALL ants are venomous in some way. And it sounds like whatever ants you have are a kind that you're sensitive, if not allergic, to. So poison them to keep them from poisoning you again.
I remember being stung by the big fuzzy black and red variety when I was a kid (we called them cow killer ants but I think they're technically a ground wasp) and it was excruciating. Hope you get better soon, Chongo.

Ants in Texas and Florida fire ants are evil. We had to get benedryl for my daughter after she got bit in Texas several times, they liked her best I guess. I don't want to meet the ones in Panama!
