It should pretty much be impossible for RAM to blow your motherboard.
RAM takes a small voltage 2.5-5V(some even less) and runs in a logic state. If you shorted out the V+ connector that gives power to the chips on a DIMM to the motherboard, it would pop the power supply (or fuse in it) if it did anything. If you short out the whole DIMM socket it is like confusing the CPU and the machine would just crash.
There shouldn't be enough current available to the DIMM socket to hurt anything up the chain, like the memory controller or the CPU as they all run at the same (or close to it) voltage.
Now if you had bad ram and crashed and left the machine in that state for days..

I've never seen anything to do with the RAM sockets actually damage the rest of the machine. I've seen DIMMs forced in backwards and the machine booted, SIMMs stuck in DIMM sockets, RAM installed while the machine was running, and a paper clip fall smack into the DIMM socket and make a spark when it shorted and power supply cut out.
If this is newer G4 with DDR it might be possible to have a goodly amount of current available to the RAM, but it still shouldn't be enough to blow anything. If that were the case then if your RAM went bad, you could ruin your machine and that would be shoddy design since RAM can go bad over time.
There must be some other factor that caused/contributed.

New RAM go in, things start going bad, service shop replaces logic board, everything fine.

It's all voodoo, I tell you.

Most excellent!

No better way to burn-in a new board than to have it crunch a few WU's for The Horde!

Thanks, reader50!

But, I think that there is an omission in your math. The Team 2 total is not the simple sum of the production of all the team members. What about our additional 10% production credit for contributing to the good karma (bad dogma?) of the universe by challenging ScotttheKing?

There is an omission, but it's not in the math. The new spreadsheet gives data matrices for graphs. Both race totals and daily production, for Teams 1-3 and internal for The Horde.

MacNN Fora ate my old login.

Is it too late to join The Horde?

Porsche and I right now have 2144 WUs and are averaging about 4 per day.

Sounds like a great idea.
Maybe I'll have to offer Scott some kind of new stats service or something...

Note, member login problems can be solved by the "email me my password" link, which appears after a failed Login.

If that fails, send an email with the details to [email protected]
Be sure to include the large personal check for faster service.

Okay my PC is up and running w/ SETI. Now I'm contemplating setting up my G4 400 which is just sitting in a corner right now. . . (you better buy it quick Scott!)

I now have a MDD dual 1ghz and an AMD 800 Thunderbird crunching units.

Go for it. I'm crunching with one G4 350, and have produced a tidy sum. If you had stayed offline for a few more days, I would have passed you.

Danometre, I think that you should join The Horde at once. This fairness to ScotttheKing thing is way overrated. The objective here was to win, not be fair.

SteevAK, pull that puppy out of the corner and fire it up!

By all means! Let's all shoot for Scott! I added about 10 Ghz more tonight. Maybe I can do something yet, if Comcast can stay online. It had been off for hours when I got home. I need to get one of those programs that downloads a bunch of WU's and caches them locally.

BTW, what is up with the stats?

Good point. Scott, how loud would the screaming get if Danometer got accidentally added to The Horde?

What do you mean, are the numbers messed up? I'm not seeing anything that looks wrong. The only thing that comes to mind is Avg per Day, which shows your avg since you joined the race. It would be nicer for it to be the avg for the previous 7 days, but I didn't have the time to set up anything that neat.

I'm talking about the Team MacNN seti stats in general, not the race. The Team MacNN seti stats pages has not been updated in a couple of days.

oops. All active stats are affected on team.macnn.com (except Competitions), but not the beta dFold stats on Scott's server at teamstats.macnn.com

Looks like I have some work to do tonight. Pity, I was making headway on the new stats code. Hopefully, it will not take too long to straighten the old stats out.

You guys may want to check the Team stats page, it failed to update again today. I use that as a yardstick to see how I am moving up and what my weekly running average is.

Thanx!

Look again. Note, I did not do anything. Current pages update every 15 minutes unless the project messess up, or any of several errors happen on the server (such as someone resetting folder permissions).

The race stats are pulled from the Current listings, so they are pretty reliable too. All other listings (Yesterday, Personals, etc) update once per day around 8-9 AM Pacific (Ubero updates around midnight Pacific). If the server happens to be busy right around that time (heavy page hits on MacNN.com for example) the stats run may not complete before several of the every-15-minute attempts. So I would not worry about them failing until the data is over 25 hours old.

Current listings should not get more than a half hour old unless there is a server or project problem.

I added 1GB of RAM to my G4, and it turned out to be CL2. Let's see if it helps my performance.

I mention more about the RAM in the PowerMac forum.

68 WU's!!

ScotttheKing recorded 68WU's yesterday. This is becoming unsightly!

Perhaps all the folks at my place will take a week off between now and the 8th and I can dedicate the entire LAN to S@H 24/7.
Perhaps there will be a massive power failure in AZ and ScotttheKing will have to hurridly re-locate to NM.
Perhaps SKIBIKESKI's new memory and SteevAK's new main board will yet turn the tide.
Perhaps chris v and gumby5647 have a secret plan involving the worlds largest cluster of Mac SE/30's.

Hmm, that's impossible. You must be looking at a 2 day result or something. The last time I checked I was down to home systems, and I can only do about 35WU/day at home.

.
Race Stats as of late November 3
Code:
. . . . . . Team 1 Team 2 Team 3 race units 1191 1111 665 yesterday . 42 40 43 '----- The Horde ----- . . . . . . Microns chris v S.B.S. SteevAK race units 439 287 219 93 yesterday . 15 11 6 6 . . . . . . reader gumby# East N. race units 44 29 0 yesterday . 1 1 0
Scott allowed me to add Danometer/Tigerabbit to The Horde. The price is I have to post the stats for the rest of the race.

The graphs will hopefully update each night, but they will remain posted in just the one place, unless we break into another page on the thread.

Microns, it doesn't show yet, but I do have a 2nd SuperComputer running as of yesterday.

Scott edit: fixed formatting

reader50 edit: fixed East Norman / gumby5647 position reversal. This also restored the perfect formatting, unlike certain other stats postings.

Race Stats as of late November 4
Code:
. . . . . . Team 1 Team 2 Team 3 race units 1199 1144 714 yesterday . 8 33 49 '------- The Horde ------- . . . . . . Microns chris v S.B.S. SteevAK race units 457 295 222 93 yesterday . 18 8 3 0 . . . . . . reader gumby# East N. race units 45 29 3 yesterday . 1 0 3
The SetiQ did not dump tonight, so Scott's and SteevAK's production figures are both low. This should catch up tomorrow.

The Report
----------------

East Norman is moving up on the outside, and threaten to lap gumby5647.
Scott secretly works on his victory speech, being careful to thank everyone he has ever known.
Microns may have been spotted stuffing extra work units into the ballot box.
reader50 laments showing his friend backlight. It's killing the extra SuperComputer's production.

Otherwise, an uneventful night, with good clear crunching weather.

Dan said the 5260s weren't worth SETI, too small video cards and too slow CPUs (603e @ 75-120Mhz). The 5500/225 (~0.5 WU/d) is barely outrunning the 7100/80 (~0.4 WU/d).

It's too late to throw the 6290 in, it couldn't complete a workunit in time, although now we have the RAM to run it.

The 6290 and 5260s are currently designated for RC5-72 when it starts, unless "Winter Break" comes first, when we'll have a chance to fiddle with some PPC version of Linux.

FYI, Sub-team ENO should fire off 3 more workunits in the next 8 hours.

You guys wouldn't consider averaging my WU/D back to when the race started since I got started so late? I mean it would only be fair, I don't have a souped up, overclocked 7100 like Scott does!!!

BTW, those graphs are great! I especially like the one that shows that my per day average is on top! Now if we could just fix the totals!!!

I think I can make a small sprint to the finish line. I think I can get 1 more 1.4Ghz Athlon, that'll boost my production to 12/day.

Race Stats as of late November 5

The Report
----------------

The SetiQ failed again tonight, SteevAK may want to switch off the proxy. Units that do not arrive before the end of the race do not count.

Courtesy of Scott's proxy problems, The Horde is gaining rapidly on Team1.

If anyone is interested, I have posted my race stats spreadsheet here for download. We do not normally post stats code, but what the heck. If anyone is interested, take a look.

edit: with the secret spreadsheet posted, I had to make a more advanced version. rolling weekly avg added for all participants. enjoy.

Don't post wrong info.

The proxy never failed. SETI is backed up now, and as a result the proxy is getting very few WU.

We are currently experiencing network problems which are resulting in slow and broken connections. A fix is being worked on.
It looks like they fixed it now though.

The SetiQ caught up. I uh, suppose this is good ...

We are getting into the home stretch now. Those crunching on slower systems should start planning the final work units. If running dual clients on a single CPU box, you may want to quit one client after it finishes, on the last day, so full CPU goes to the remaining client in time to finish before the race cutoff.

Race cutoff is November 8, approx 8:30 PM Pacific, when the SETI ranks script finishes processing MacNN. I pull the race data from the ranks datafiles.

Good race guys. I am retiring the bulk of my farm now. I still have 2 more machines to sell, for now, hopefully they'll be gone soon. It was fun.

Ok, now is the time to strike. Everyone can unload their 3-day's worth of production that they have cached. Such a pity that my cache seems to have wandered off...

If OneMacGuy unloads his 600-WU cache, we will all be in the sinker.

Reminder, the race cutoff is November 8, approx 8:30 PM Pacific. All units must be returned before then, or they will not count.

Excellent job members of The Horde!!!

We didn't win but at least we kept ScotttheKing on his toes for a few days!

Happy crunching where ever your DC cycles take you next.

As for me, I hear a BOINCing in the distince, some pulse detection algorythms calling me, and the sky above the southern hemisphere is beckoning...

Oops! And congratulations ScotttheKing! Well done!
