1GHz
64MB ATI 9000
512MB RAM
60GB Disk
DVD-R/CD-RW
Airport card included

867MHz
32MB ATI 9000
256MB RAM
40GB Disk
DVD-ROM/CD-RW

That puts a big gap between the 2 models.

Edited since I got ahead of myself on the DDR ram, it is the level 3 cache which uses DDR SDRAM.

OK, WTF? The Canadian website still has the TiBook 800.

However, the Canadian store does have the SuperDrive TiBook fortunately.

I was definitely considering the low end model, but now, the ONLY model to get is the 1 GHz TiBook. I wonder what the education discount is. (Retail CAD$4799).

It's not DDR, which is fine by me, since that means I can use my PC133 512 MB stick that I have in my iBook.

TC, I agree. The 1 GHZ machine is more than worth the $700 premium.

US higher ed cost is $2819.

The iBook got a minor change too.

800 MHz G3 at top end. ($1849 - good price)
700 MHz at low end. ($999) - great price)

This is a wonderful, incredible update, and includes a tremendous price reduction, also! Buy a 1 Gig PB G4 with combo drive, for only $2799!!! And with Superdrive for $2999 - upgrade to a full Gig o' memory for only $40 more!! Radeon 9500 with 64 MB DDR!!! HOLY CRAP!!!

My orders going in this morning!

I've got one question: Apple's website states that the PB G4 Superdrive only writes DVD's at "1x" - doesn't the iMac's Superdrive write at "2x?" Anyone have any comparisons about the performance comparisons of this Superdrive vs. those in the newer iMacs and Towers?

DAMN, but this is a good morning!!!!!

My university computer store says that they won't get the new educational pricing (just pricing, not even the actual units) until usually a week or two after it shows up on the Canadian website.

Dammit!

Actually, I would have still preferred a PowerBook with a smaller form factor, but this will have to do.

I would hope not.

But the new updated TiBook's and iBook's are driving me insane. I can't decide what to get, yet I have more than sufficient funds in my bank account.

There's even more of a difference... with the Superdrive update iMac's can burn DVD-R at 4x and DVD-RW at 2x. Begs the question can you record a DVD-RW on the new TiBook?

Other than that looks pretty sweet!

Yea, yesterday you could get the 5200. Today you get a much faster PB with a SuperDrive, but a slower HD. Oh well, you can't have everything

Does anyone have any info on other tech advances in this PB?

Sean was talking about variable bus/CPU speeds, and newer cooling system...did any of that make it to this incarnation?

Also, Will CompUSA get these about the same time as Apple? Or does Apple get them first out?

I read that, too - my iMac 800 is the original 15" G4 iMac - does the firmware update allow mine to do DVD-R at 4x also? (it only listed 2x at purchase last March.)

You raise a good question, though - 1x DVD-R burning would be very slow, indeed - is it worth the extra $100 cost? (the 1 Gig G4 sells for $200 more with Superdrive, but includes 60 Gig HD, which you can drop to the 40 Gig for $100 off.)

FANTASTIC!!!! This is awesome - this will be first Mac ever, and it'll be a killer machine. Here's the stats:

1ghz powerbook
1gb RAM
Radeon 9000 w/ 64VRAM
60MG Hard Drive
DVD-ROM/CD-RW

I almost included the superdrive, but in all honesty, I have no interest in burning DVD's (I also have no interest in burning CD's). It would have been a nice toy though.

What a great day!

The iMac SuperDrive can only burn at 2X. The update allows it burn 4X media without frying itself. Furthermore, it will only burn at 1X on that 4X media.

As for TiBook DVD-RW burning, I'm 99% sure the answer is yes, since the Pioneer is the only one announced.

Actually I would have liked to have DVD-RAM support, that would have necessitated a Panasonic or something, and a laptop version hasn't been released yet.

Did you include the Applecare? I wasn't, but the guy told me he would take off 50 dollars if I bought it now. Yeah I hear yeah about burning DVD's.. Not sure why I went with it, really. For the 188 in price, I was like.. what the hell.. and since Apple knocked off some on the price.. My total came out to be 3,403.35

Cool... thanks for the correction....

I wonder how hot it will get burning a full DVD or perhaps creating the DVD. I can see a new market, instead of those keyboard / screen protectors someone will be selling a thin piece of Space Shuttle tile to remove the heat...

I see that you in the US are having their double your RAM deal payed for by UK customers!

US: $40 to double your RAM.
UK: 293 to go from 256 - 512Mb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Crucial will sell you 512Mb SODIMMs at 122 each including shipping and tax!
So (yet again) its much cheaper to sell those lousy 2x256ers and whack in some crucial ones!

Oh well, when they get properly fast and have bluetooth on, I might buy one! 1Ghz is not enough. Sorry guys, but in PC Land (where I'm from this sort of money (and indeed much less) buys you 2+Ghz with DDR RAM!

Don't start telling me how nice Powerbooks are, I already know. I am a proud ex owner of a 667 Rev A. But it really didn't cut the mustard.

I must say I am quite shocked at how great an upgrade this has been by apple standards! Radeon 9000 is right on the money! Superdrive - I thought some one said it was too big to fit in. Oh and the disinformation centre at apple must have been working hard on this one: Won't break Ghz barrier!

Its nice to see a product update that didn't totally disappoint, its just ashame there's no Jobsian announcement event for me to watch.

Keep on hopin'!
Some men see things as they are and say why?
I dream things that never were and say why not?

Well, I've ordered mine. Seeing as this update has everything I wanted, I didn't have any excuse . 1GHz/1GB RAM, but I left off the superdrive. The 3-4 week wait was too much!

They are rumor sites...enough said! If you are looking for 100% accurate information, it will not happen; however, 100% speculation will.

For every 10 rumor sites, I usually find 1 out of those to be even close in their information.

All the new iBooks and the Low end iBooks are in the stores. So if you want an 867 with 32MB 9000Pro, they're ready to go out the door. No Superdrives but hey, I've got one on my QS.

I finally get to replace this PC that replaced my Wallstreet that died during my trip to Hawaii. How I managed to be patient for 3 months is beyond me Even a 800 Mhz for 2399 could budge me.

5-7 days on mine. And now for the obsessive and constant checking of my order status. I'll probably be a significant percentage of Apple's bandwidth fees this month.

Wow, Apple pleasantly surprises me for once. I got up at 2:30AM here in Japan, just to see if Apple had updated their site... Now if I only had some money!

did they change the screen resolution on the powerbook?
i think the update is great, but i can't understand the lack of bluetooth being built in. surely they can find room for it...ah, maybe next revision. gotta love the superdrive option though. that sucka must get hot! my ti400 is a toasty little bugger without a superdrive and 600 extra mhz!

Am I the only one who couldn't care less about BlueTooth? (Then again, I still use an old 8 MB Visor Deluxe USB, and don't have BlueTooth on my phone. I'll be upgrading neither.)

IMO, the Radeon 9000 and the SuperDrive are MUCH more important upgrades. (I wonder how many that said they couldn't care less about the SuperDrive are going to get the SuperDrive PB. )

At least with BlueTooth, you could get a little bitty dongle that could be plugged in. No such luck with the SuperDrive.

P.S. This update totally blows away my prediction, which was:

933 GHz G4
Radeon 9000
Combo Drive
BlueTooth
For about $3200.

before i used laptops for business i figured syncing and bluetooth were bollocks. Now its mandatory. What is crazy is that Apple sold us a world of bluetooth in MWNY with all this nice software and yet they dont deliver it on their hardware. Other vendors with notebooks i wouldnt touch (since ive switched) have plenty of bluetooth support but no software.

Weird world this...

I use my laptop for work, and syncing is VERY important.

However, I don't have a problem keeping in my briefcase a small light cable.

The lack of BluTooth is a pretty minor point in my view.
