Can I make a mountable image of a DVD for later playback from the hard drive?

A friend of mine who owns an IBM Thinkpad is able to do this with a Windows program named Virtual CD ( http://www.virtualcd-online.com )and I was wondering if something similar could be done with Diskcopy or by using dd and mount.

Thanks,

Thanks,
I think you'll have to decrypt it first. Actually, once you've decrypted it you don't need to make an image. You can just keep the VIDEO_TS folder.

or you can just copy all the files from the DVD on to a folder on the Hard Drive

open dvd player and go to File/Open VIDEO_TS Folder...

should play just fine

Some DVDs have encryption that won't let them be played this way, but you can use programs like 0Sex to make images that are viewable.

when I copy a VIDEO_TS folder, the playback is totally garbled

I tried 3 different DVDs, all behaved the same. Running OS X 10.2.2 and DVD Player 3.2.

Is it something about the DVDs, or is it something I'm doing wrong?

Wait, wait wait... You mean that you can copy DVDs whitout many problems and without having to decrypt anything?

I guess I'm out of the loop with DVD copying
