I bought a used Powerbook 180 ($20) which makes the startup sound but then displays a grey screen with NO icons on it. No flashing floppy, no nothing.

What do I need to replace on this gem? (Try to avoid obvious ones like "a better PB", "a REAL PB" and the like.)

My only thought is to try to contact a place like http://www.powerbookmedic.com/ or the like, who might have more experience repairing old powerbooks than those of us here on the forums.

If I had to guess though, I'd say you need a new motherboard :-)

Good luck,
