it may be that the microphone is picking up the fan.

In OS X, Make sure the Sound Input is set to "Built-in Microphone" (System Prefs -> Sound -> Input tab)
Same with OS 9, only use the Sound Control Panel.
I doubt Apple would ship a computer with a microphone that only picked up the fan.

Yeah, but that was some Funny shite. So true, my iMac G4 has been getting louder and louder with the fan.

Well I've been through thr preferences and they are right amd its not the fan cause it's to ...It's almost like white noise except a hum
I can hear what I'm trying to record way down deep in there.
when I hit 'play through' the meters go up and I just hear this hum
huummm.

I used to get that on my iMac system (I sold it). I think there's the inevitable sound of any recording system that's a.) built into the same small system as a spinning fan and b.) that close to the fan.
If you wanna get better quality recordings, buy an Onkyo MSE-U33 hub/audio capture device for USB ($35) and a nice microphone.

what type of IMAC do you have that doesn't have a fan? I have read some publication about the built in microphone did pick up the fan noise, but since yours doesn't have a fan than I have no clue. Sorry.

iMac DV SE doesn't have a fan.
What OS are you using? If OS9x, go into preferences folder in system folder and drag the sound preferences to the trash. Restart. The OS will build new preferences automatically, but you need to go into the sound control panel through the control panel icon in your Apple menu items, and reset the preferences. Make sure input is set to built in mike. You can check the check signal level box, and set the input gain to your requirements
Good luck!
