too bad Apple won't allow you to turn off the metal in iTunes 4. And what's the deal with the OS 9-like window resizing?

iTunes does outline resizing on my iBook 500 but does live resizing on my G4. Probably some kind of gauge built in to figure out which to use.
And just because it is Carbon doesn't mean anything. iTunes is probably one of the best performing iApps BECAUSE it is Carbon.

did i say carbon was bad? no. and yes it does mean something: it means you can't turn off the metal appearance. i'm also not saying that i don't like metal, i'm fine with itunes's appearance. sheesh.

It doesn't run on OS 9 though does it? Why have it carbon if it's OS X only? I was wishing for skins too...

Making it Cocoa just makes it slower plus it takes time and resources. And it doesn't run in OS 9 (well at least iTunes 3 didn't)

I could care less if its Carbon or Cocoa... I just know it runs better than any of the other iApps. Have you ever tried iMovie?

The window resize thing might be to save CPU usage?

Maybe it has to do with QuartzExtreme. Both my TiGz and my roommate's Ti667 have live window resizing and they have QuartzExtreme.

As far as I know, it DOES. If you don't have QE then you don't get the live window resizing.

I don't have QE and I get live resizing. And you don't need to get a new Mac NetworkShadow just a new graphics card.

If this is your reasoning, then why have any application written in Cocoa? Why even have OS X? Why would Apple invent a slower and lesser programming language than the one they had previous to it? And OS 9 development is over. Why break the rules after you tell others to stop development.

Just hold down command while resizing and it'll do it live. If you try that you'll see its pretty slow, while brushed-cocoa apps are fast.

iFix2 will give QuickTime 6 and iTunes 3 the new iMovie 3 look. It also fixes various GUI elements that were outdated or bad looking. It also uses the new sunken titlebar buttons found in SmoothStripes/Aqua Extreme/Brushed.

Cool. It's nice to know that that's all it takes - there I was thinking that something else was lacking with my iBook 800 that was stopping it from being live. It's not even that slow, i.e. comparable to doing it in iCal here. Still odd that it sounds like some are getting it by default - not a G3 vs. G4 thing, is it ?

iTunes will never be ported to cocoa
oh and - the mp3/aiff/whatever format/ decoders are made with C++ and C (what I mean is that they don't use cocoa), most of the time, and they are the "part" of the app that handles most of the though work, so don't throw that "COCOA IS SLOWER" bullshit here.
I've seen mpg123-based Cocoa mp3 players that are twice as fast as iTunes.

No I do, I've got an iMac G3 450MHz, and it's not too easy to put new graphics cards in them. Also the processor is feeling slow to me now. It's time for a G4 or IBM 970. ^^
If anyone can put a different background texture in iTunes I'b be happy. But no pinstripes ether!

looks like you can change the look just like in the OS, through the rsrc file.

Does it still suffer from the greyscale problem?

I dunno, I have had grescale problems before and I have just changed it to rgb and put it back in and it worked.
