Being a new switcher I have gotten used to the F5 (refresh) key used in the Windows platform. I have shared drives between my PC and MAC but if there is a change in my PC the mac does not see it. I have to disconnect and then reconnect to server before I see the change.
Is there a "F5" fuctionality in the MAC?

Refresh? What's that do again? Isn't that like "Cleanup"? View > Cleanup in the Finder to arrange things nicely. And it's Mac, not MAC, before you get yelled at.

Closing the folder and opening it again don't do the trick? I bet you do not need to disconnect...

maybe clean up will work....I have to try that and thanks for the MAC/Mac lesson MindFad.
Simply closing the folder and reopening it doesnt work...that was my hopes too. I can even force a restart of Finder and it wont show the change...I'm still baffeled

Clicking on the desktop and back to the folder window usually does the trick for me?

We have some similar problems here at work, although we are on OS9. Our sys admin says it's a bug on the PC server, and not a prob with the Mac. They have to install some service pacs or something to fix it, when they get around to it...

Mac OS has always updated mounted servers (like any other mounted volume) live. OS 9 and earlier update within a couple of seconds, while most versions of OS X sometimes take a couple of seconds (even a minute sometimes), but in fact, the 10.2.5 update is supposed to make the updates truly live now.
Any problems with updates are, at least with Mac OS 9 or earlier and OS X 10.2.5, limited to server-side problems.

I have noticed poor refresh when using Samba - that's because Samba has a cache and it doesn't seem to get refreshed properly sometimes. I wonder if windows itself uses a cache too for file sharing.
For instance, my Mac Samba shares out to my PC. On my PC I open a file. I then close the file, and edit it on the Mac. If I then reopen the file on the PC, I sometimes get the original, unedited version ! Very strange - but it's not a Mac problem per se.

Might be true in theory, but in reality, sorry, doesn't work like that.
OSX is a bitch with file updating. As Mr_Frost said, clicking the Desktop then back to the folder window works for me...

Unfortunately, most (all) finder windows don't update that often, I usually have to do some clicking to get them to update.
And yes, that's even on local hard drives.

Also if you are connecting to a windows 2000 server using it's Appletalk function, there are terrible problems with file windows updating when using OSX, (apparently 2000 needs updating).
You're better off using Samba, which has it's own problems, but if you continue to have severe problems try DAVE from www.thursby.com - free trial - to see if it improves things.

<bad tornado joke>F5 functionality is usually found within, but not limited to, the mid-west U.S. I disabled it on my Mac (I live in Oklahoma), because it was blowing away everything on my desk every time I hit the key. </bad tornado joke>

When using shared drives on my local network, I also have that problem.
I find that relaunching the Finder does the trick just fine.

You all went on a banter here. What they are asking is if you can refresh the browser, being IE, Safari, Netscape etc with F5 and yes you can do this. If you just try it it will refresh the page. Reload, Refresh etc. Not anything to do with what you are all rambling on about.
Oh you can't do it in Safari, but I am sure you can make it so that it does do it. You can in IE for sure though as I have done it before, and Netscape probably also.

Huh, the original post asked about refreshing windows that show drives. The equivalent on the Mac would be the Finder, for which there is no shortcut yet.

Learn yourself some Command-R

I love to see people just come into posts and try to act superior, great work, you are still dumb.
Not one spot in the original post did it say connecting to drives. But anyways, you sure seem passionate about this topic so I will let you take it away!

Are we looking at the same original post? Let me highlight the salient point for you.
I have shared drives between my PC and MAC but if there is a change in my PC the mac does not see it. I have to disconnect and then reconnect to server before I see the change.
Also, have you tried Command-R in Safari? Is it working OK? You did notice it refreshes the window, right?

You might of re-read the post before you said anything else. The part about shared drives was important.
Who's dumb now? It's not Wombat Predator.
