Actually, I don't think it looks so bad.
Better than the original anyway:

Is this rock and roll, or
a form of state control?

Looks like windows... though it does have a kinda nice look to it. Try a few more mockups at the real size.

You can have borders using WindowShadeX.

I never understand why people want window borders? I love how OS X doesn't have them. It makes the GUI simpler and borders would just be something non-functional taking up space, even if it's just a pixel or two.

I like the idea, it's not an aqua spin off. But I don't think I could use a theme that was mostly squared off but with circle scroll buttons. But I think this could be refined into an excellent theme.

I like the idea. Work with it, add some things. Don't just give up and get discouraged.

You can't have that kind of lengthwise gradations with OSX themes either. The 'rules' for OSX theming were written to make Aqua possible and that's about it.... they can be 'bent' to make other themes, but you are breaking them with gradations like that.

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

Looks better but no, you can't do the highlight around the title. The area between the buttons and the toolbar button has to be the same pattern/color.

That is not necessarily the case, Tewks my man. You could start building off one of the many layo-modified themes (alumite, for example) that has the wider endcaps (75px per cap), then make your "lengthwise" gradient titlebar pxm wider than any window size possible (4096px or something equally gargantuan) but limit the extent of your gradient so that the entire length of the gradated part of this pxm was less than the result of this function:
(length of left encap, 75px most likely) + (length of titlebar in between endcaps when window is made to be the smallest size possible)
You'd just need to make sure whichever endcap wasn't involved in your gradient fantasy fit in with whatever the end color for your gradient was back in the previous step.
I'd whip up a mockup, but i r got teh SARS ;^)
