Aarrghhh!!!
Today was the day AT&T's cable modems switched to comcast. They'd had you download this "updater" that presumably was a collection of Applescripts for updating Mail.
So I ran it this morning.
First off it doesn't properly update the name in your preferences. Those of you having problems change the name (i.e. [email protected] to just clark.goble) It also screws up your password. So I hope you wrote it down somewhere. If you are like me you don't type that password much so when you have to re-enter it...
(I finally guessed it)
Now I'm getting about 10 copies of every email sent to me the past week and a half!
Damn Comcast. How hard was it to test this stuff?
Anyway, I got things working for those of you having similar problems with Comcast's AT&T updater for OSX.

this is a good example why you should search for previous threads. I asked this questiona bout installing this "transition wizard" by comcast, but i already knew the answer, it ain't gonna do anything that you couldn't do yourself. it's really for people that don't know any better.

That link went to some porn site. Was it supposed to?
BTW - the prior comcast threads were from more than a year ago and didn't deal with AT&T -> Comcast.

I feel for you guys.... I was forced over to comcast about a year ago... what a nightmare. For about a week you have no idea if your prefs are messed up or if it's the server or the cables or their prefes or your modem or what. All the modems here had to be replaced to operate with the new network and no one knew whether to buy one or rent Comcast's etc. There is hope though..... within two weeks everything was fine and has been perfect ever since. I definitely wouldn't run their software though... just update your own settings.

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

I had no major issues with the transition. Mail did forget my password and homepage was reset to Comcast.net (which crashes Safari every time). No, no major issues.

Hmm, I'm on AT&T, and Comcast just recently moved into our area as well. I'm sticking with AT&T atm, but I wouldn't hesitate to switch to Comcast if need be. Why they hell are you guys installing software for a cable connection to begin with? AT&T wanted me to do the same damn thing, but I never bothered. The network configuration is near zero, I'm confused as to why anyone would install such software.
jesse ;-)

Did the switch today as well. No problem so far.
I refused to download the 'Wizard' (too Microsoft-y for me!). I just changed the specs by myself.
Unless I missed something it's only the incoming & outgoing mail server, news groups and the e-mail address that needed to be changed.

yeah I changed it by hand as well. the only thing that bothers me is that they keep saying that the wizard (a) changes your settings and (b) activates forwarding of your old email. I can't imagine what the wizard would do to effect part (b), short of calling home, but I hope it's all talk, since for windows users who don't use Outlook Express they seem to recommend the manual route, and make no mention of forwarding. Anyone know for sure?

The only prob I had was it screwed up the Description of my account in the prefs. It forgot my password too, no biggie. That's something that you should always keep track of anyways.

Good point about the forwarding. Can't imagine it isn't done automatically. I tried going to my ATTBI mail account on the web and I couldn't even reach it anymore. Completely taken over by Comcast.
I just sent a message from a hotmail account to my old e-mail address and it forwarded to the new comcast one. I guess that answers that.

Despite the almost weekly nagging I refused to use their "wizard" becuase I don't trust some yahoo working at an ISP to automate anything on my computer, espcially when they're calling the thing a "wizard" on a Mac; they could have at least took the time to do a minor bit of research to determine that such a thing should be called a transition assistant on a Macintosh but then I wouldn't expect any sort of thing from said ISP tech yahoos.
I simply waited and got the info from the web site, it was just smtp, pop and news server address changes afterall.
On the username, it seems to me that they added a secondary account with a new name and not deleted my primary with the name I've been using.
Everything appears to be working normally now.

Anyone got Comcast email to work with OS X mail app. I got everything set correctly, or so I thought. But mail sends my user name, password, then states that it is fetching mail but nothing happens. Can someone who has it working tell me their settings, please.

POP3 (Incoming Mail) Server: mail.comcast.net
SMTP (Outgoing Mail) Server: smtp.comcast.net
Your E-Mail address: [email protected]
This did it for me. (Ignore the link. I couldn't get it to go away)

It's weird though as I am not getting any mail out with smtp.comcast.net as my outgoing mail server.

check old e-mails (if possible), you username may have changed, and they likely sent you an e-mail saying wht your new username is.
