How do I copy files from a pc to my mac?

Im trying to get all my word files on my pc over to my mac. I don't have microsoft office, I have apple works. Is there some way to convert them from word files to files that work with apple works?

I thought appleworks can import word files, no?
You can just save the word file as rich text which any text editor can read by using the 'save as' command, or try some other formats (maybe an older word format can be read by appleworks).

Yeah, AppleWorks, I thought, would open .doc files created in Microsoft Word without any hassle.
