Hi!

I just received additional RAM (512MB) for my PB 17".

How do I install it?
Do I have to put the PB to sleep or shut it down completely?
What happens if I remove both the battery and the power cable?
Should I remove all the stickers from the RAM? (even the one that says "No warranty if removed").

Could you give me a short step by step summary please?? I love my machine-I don`t want to make any mistake.

Thanks

Matthias

Well if you want step by step instructions, look no further than the manual that came with your beauty. It's all in there. As for your other questions...

Yes, shutdown your computer completely, don't just put it to sleep. If you leave it in sleep mode there is still power to the RAM. That could mean a nasty shock for you. When you get ready to install the RAM, shutdown the computer, unplug the power, and remove the battery. If the computer is off nothing will happen at all. If your computer was asleep when you do this OS X will just need to repair the disk at start up (it will do this on its own, you don't need to do anything special). As for the stickers, leave 'em, they make no difference.

I second the idea of going exactly by the guide that came w/ your 17" PB. It's there, from start to finish.

After getting my 512 shipped to my work place, I was on my home and decided to stop by the Apple store. Of course, since I didn't buy my memory there (I don't recommend it since Apple really hikes up the price on theirs), one of the employees there I had talked to a couple of times leant me his special Apple Swiss Army knife with all of the rightly-sized allen wrenches. And although he couldn't install the memory himself, he watched over my shoulder to make sure I was doing everything correctly. I'm not saying you should try this, but if you're really unsure of what to do, it's a possibility.

As a rule: If your going to install ram, hard drive, or a non-pcmcia card (IE airport) you *MUST* shutdown your powerbook and pull the battery out.

Pulling the battery makes sure there is no extra electrical current flowing that could damage any logic when inserting new devices. It also makes sure you shutdown, because if you didn't, you will have once you pull that battery!

Thanks to all of you!

Just upgraded to 1024MB of RAM.
I read the manual but wanted to make absolutely positively not the slightest mistake; it`s not every day that one operates on such an expensive piece of equipment.

For future buyers: install the 1024MB RAm right away; the difference in performance is huge and well worth it.

Totally, there's no way I can ever go back to less than a gig of ram in my life. The difference between 512 and 1 gig is huge to me. This you can really feel the difference.

Here's the link to the company that has the rams for sale. http://www.transintl.com/store/categ...m?Category=942

As you can see under the ram selection, it will cost you a wopping $649 for a single dimm of 1 gig ram for the Powerbook 17inch. Ouch Ouch Ouch....
