I was kind of curious. I figure they use a lot of Macs, but on a recent trip to Iowa State University the tour guide stated that pixar uses Windows boxes from Silicon Graphics similiar to the ones used in the labs at ISU.

Yeah, Pixar does not use macs, though I am sure they (Steve) would love to use em.

(Were there not rumors of them switching to G5s? or XServes? Or something...)

I believe they do use Macs for office work. A friend of mine just picked up a truckload of G3s that have Pixar asset decals (you know, the metal ones) plastered on them. The hard disks had all been removed.

I remember reading somewhere that they are migrating to Intel/Linux for their rendering.

Hmm, I thought it was lots and lots and lots of Xeons recently. It was the best stuff at the time, I think, or most cost-efficient anyway. Like someone said, I also read somewhere that a lot of office stuff is Mac-based. But who cares? I'm sure the artists get to use whatever they're familiar or comfortable with. Some probably do their PS work on Macs and 3-D stuff on PCs. Whatever. Tools are tools. Monsters wouldn't have been any better if they had done it all and completely on Macs.

pixar moved to intel for their render farm early in the year.

Their day to day machines are supposedly moving to Mac OS X.

Yes, Pixar does use Macs for the majority of their office computing. People in the Art department use them profusely as well. Of course, they are not exclusive to a single platform, you sillies.

That is, this is what I remember from when I worked there 5 years ago.

Oh yeah, and the NeXT box in Steve's office was pretty entertaining.

Wow, NeXT boxes...I really liked those. I remember the server cube. Sorry, brain fart, you can all now go about your business
