hmmm... depends on your definition of 'race' i s'pose. i was seeing it as an ongoing thing; more of a marathon than a sprint. i know the soviets were the first to throw a man [or dog - let's not forget comrade laika] up there, but the US did a lot more with their manned missions. if the chinese get a man on mars first, i reckon that rockets them [excuse the pun] into first place.
of course if it's a sprint, then whoever does <whatever> first wins.
next poll: is the space race a marathon or a sprint?

Space programs are a byproduct of military
missile programs and spy satellite technology
development.
Does anyone remember the bush administrations
all-out hard ball foreign policy ?
China considers Taiwan to be a breakaway
province and is always ready to invade.
Does anyone remember north korea ?
Does anyone remember the china
of tiananmen square ?
Literally close to a billion impoverished citizens
and the government has a multi-billion dollar
space program for a PR stunt ?
This is not a benign news item.
But if you feel it is -
A fun question for you : could you see the great
wall of china if you were standing on the
moon ?
It could all end in tears...

You guys are pretty ignorant. The average citizen in China is not "impoverished" at all.

In 2002, with its 1.3 billion people but a GDP of just $4,400 per capita, China stood as the second-largest economy in the world after the US
GDP: purchasing power parity - $5.7 trillion (2002 est.)
Budget: expenditures: $267.1 billion
A couple billion is just 0.02% of their annual expenditures.

For sure... remember some dumb US pilot got his o-so-high-tech plane grounded in southern China? I guess they leaked everything from there...

I was trying to say it is not just
a PR stunt. That even more money
is being channeled into an expanding
military space program - how much
no one knows and could run into trillions.
Soviet union and USA did exactly
the same thing.
But + fascinating = figures ;)
