This scanner will not work on a Mac with USB 2.0. It will only work with USB 1.0. I have been able to use it on my new PB through a Belkin 1.0 USB hub. It will work then. Canon is aware of the problem and are investigating so they can update drivers. They were kind and concerned on the phone, and seemed to have good Mac tech support. I'm posting here because the new PBooks only have 2.0.
MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7), 1.6 GHz, Core i5, 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3, 128 GB SSD, 24" LED ACD, 1TB Time Capsule (late 2009), IOS4 ATV, 16GB iPhone 4

Their product information is unacceptably obscure on whether USB 2.0 is supported in Mac OSX. I spoke with a Canon support person today who said that "it works with recent Macs." When I asked what that meant, he said that the support people could only give him that information. Their website certainly offers no enlightenment.

This is just unacceptable for a company of Canon's stature in the market. I have a 1G TiBook. Why would I order this scanner if they can't tell me whether it will work with my Mac?

I called Canon yesterday to find out if the LiDE 50 would work on the newer Macs with USB 2.0, and I was told to call tech support. The tech support rep put me on hold for a few minutes and then came back to tell me that the engineers said, "they haven't received that information from Japan yet." I found that pretty amusing...

PeterKG - Thanks for the post. I was thinking of getting this scanner. I'll be interested to see the resolution for this.

It is interesting. On my Dual Gig MDD, I added a SIIG USB 2.o 5 port card. Under OS 10.2.8, in System Profiler, the Lide 50 scanner shows up as a High speed device. So the system sees the USB 2.0 scanner. If I try to scan I get a couple of clicks from the scanner like it is trying to calibrate. But then a dialogue box comes up saying that communications failed.

Plugging the scanner into an onboard USB 1.1 port indicates a Full speed device and works just fine.

So the problem does appear to be with the Canon drivers.

Dave,
When the scanner is attached to the USB 2.0 PCI card, are the scan speeds significantly faster than when using the onboard USB 1.1 port? Thanks.

It will not scan connected to the USB 2.0 card. So I can't judge until Canon fixes the driver.

Oh, oops. I just noticed that you already mentioned that in your original post, which I obviously didn't read carefully... hehe.

I think it be great to just throw my scanner in my laptop bag and start scanning reference only pics on the move.

I was looking at buying one of these for an iBook G4. I guess I'll have to wait until Canon updates their drivers. Glad I saw this thread...
