I'm planning to purchase a 14" 1 ghz ibook tomorrow and it occurred to me that it doesn't fit in my bag if I put it inside an incase bag (the ones Apple recommended to me). My books are all paperback (a couple notebooks, etc) and I'm always running around campus so I'm interested in knowing how much of a beating these things can take. I've heard from some people that the components are encased in rubber but I haven't been able to confirm that. Any experience would be appreciated.

You need a sleeve case, then you throw this into your backpack or whatever...

There is a thread somewhere on this forum that lists like 50 of em, but i swear by sfbags.com sleeve case, it's pricey at $38 but, it's absolutely worth it, it seems bulletproof, i have three of them now, two for my iBooks, and one for my g'friends iBook, they are great and will last forever, mine has been around the world a few times and still looks brand new. You could probably get a cheaper one for like $20, but it will fall apart after a few years, sfbags case is made out of balistic nylon and neoprene, sturdy stuff!

good luck!

Get a 12" model. I read in another post from you, that you want the bigger screen for watching videos. Of course, the 14" is better for watching movies, but if you want to carry the iBook around the campus, I'd really consider getting a 12". And 200 MHz, or 133 respectively, are not too much. Save the money and get an iPod instead.

I've been looking around for a laptop-ready knapsack that doesn't scream "STEAL ME", I'll be sure to post again soon once I've found a few.

A few that I've seen so far:

- Belkin: Ugly bags, nothing about their design particularly impressed me

- Targus: A couple of very nice knapsack models, but in my opinion the brand name Targus is a beacon for would-be thieves

- Eddie Bauer: A couple of their high end models look like plain knapsacks, but have nice designs inside for laptop, accessories, etc. I'm leaning in this direction currently.

I just don't think you need a computer bag, get a good sleeve, and the shove that in your backpack, I have a North Face pack that I got on sale for like $30, no need to spend a lot of money on an ugly pack.

I've been second guessing myself over which model to get all week

Since I really want the speed, I think I might shell out the cash for the Powerbook 12" now, best of both worlds. I get the extra speed (and L2 cache) as well as the portability.

iThrow my 14" g3 iBook into a standard backpack. One zipper storage area is filled with books and the power adapter, the other big one with the iBook.
P.S. If you use a laptop carrying case, put it in something else. Carrying a laptop carrying case with Apple logo is like having a sign saying "high resale value laptop IN HERE!"
