i have a rev. b 17" powerbook
with an extra 512mb of RAM (apple brand)
twice now...
when putting the computer to routine sleep by closing the lid
i come back later to find the fan running
and the computer very hot
i open the lid and the screen stays dark no matter what i do
so i have to do a hard reset by holding the power button down for 5 plus seconds
then she boots up fine

what could this be?

still running jaguar, by the way

thanks so much in advance

greg

After the 10.2.8 debacle that really hurt Apple - but at least you bought Panther. Personally, I found it a super upgrade - Expose alone is worth it. that feature has really impacted the way I work - I can multitask on projects so much easier. Anyway, with current generation hardware like you have these upgrades are very advisable. You don't want to get behind on system versions.

I've noticed my 17" PowerBook runs hotter since installing 10.3. Has anyone else noticed this?

Sounds like a kernel panic related to sleep. Sometimes, by looking at the black screen from an angle, you can see the faint outline of the kernel panic box. Anyway, that would account for the hard reset.

Try an archive and install, that should fix it.
